    Iwate Tono-shi Tsuchibuchicho Yamaguchi 2-chiwari
    A watermill with a thatched roof on the Yamaguchi River in Tono City. It's date of origin is unknown, but it was once used for threshing and milling flour. It's still operational. It was made to utilize a large amount of water, and with its old-fashioned appearance, it’s become a much-used symbol of traditional Tono. The idyllic scenery also makes it popular with tourists.

    "Dendera Field is in the Yamaguchi area of Tono City. It's known for the ""Ubasute Folktale.” According to the Legends of Tono, there was a custom of people over 60 years of age coming to live out their final days there in a self-sufficient manner. Now, there is the idyllic landscape includes beautiful natural scenery with traditional minka houses in the distance."

    There are several stone statues of foxes on the outskirts of Tono. This one is on a street between the Kogarase River and National Route 340. Legend says that one day when a man passed through the neighborhood, he was tricked by a fox who turned itself into a young maiden. A sign board tells the story so you can experience the tale for yourself. The statue is located on a small hill with a nice view overlooking the countryside with the mountains in the distance.

    A Shinto shrine on a mountainside about 12 kilometers southwest of JR Tono Station. Konsei-sama is a Shinto god worshiped in the Tono region who is thought to bestow children and good harvests. The god makes an appearance in the Legends of Tono. The shrine contains a roughly 1. 5-meter phallic symbol made of stone. It is said that polishing it with a scrub brush will reward the worshiper with children, alleviate feminine discomfort, etc. While it was lost for a period, it was discovered during construction in recent times and re-enshrined. The Konsei Festival is held annually on May 5th.

    "A popular, romantic spot in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture, a four-minute walk from Hanamaki Station. The 10-meter high, 80-meter long retaining wall features a fantastic picture created with special paint. It was inspired by the novel ""Night on the Galactic Railroad.” Only the painting's white outlines are visible during the daytime, and the full painting can only really be appreciated at night. When lit up in the darkness, it glows a mysterious and vivid blue and pink, creating a wonderful impression of the galaxy. It's illuminated from sunset to 10p.m.."

    A Japanese pub located 753 meters from Hanamaki Station on the JR Tohoku Main Line. It's original noren curtain opens onto a modern Japanese style interior. With a feel of the worldview of Miyazawa Kenji, it's a comfortable music-filled space to relax and enjoy a drink or a meal. The regular table seating and low table seating with a recess beneath where you can extend your legs are all softly lit. The shop can accommodate up to 40 guests with advance reservations. Open for lunch from 11 a. m. including on Sundays, they offer their platinum pork fillet cutlet meal sets which are hearty and limited to 10 servings a day. There is also a choice of all-you-can-drink party plans.

Village of Fairy Tales is a facility where you can enjoy learning in the fantasy world of Miyazawa Kenji. The Mori no Misekkoya is among the log cabins known as ""Kenji's Classrooms.” In addition to merchandise based on Miyazawa Kenji's work, the shop also handles a variety of Hanamaki specialties. The log cabin classrooms are all side by side, with an ""Animal Classroom"" in the center, a ""Plant Classroom"" on the left, and the Mori no Misekkoya on the left. On the right side, there is a ""Star Classroom"" and a ""Bird Classroom.” All of them feature elements found in his fairy tales."

    This historic building is located approximately a 15-minute drive from Hanamaki Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. The building was constructed in the Edo period, and later relocated and reconstructed when Doshin Hanamaki came to live here. It is situated right next to the Miyazawa Kenji Poetry Tablet. As a samurai residence in the form of a curved house from the Hansei period, it has been designated as a municipally designated Cultural Property. Visitors can tour the exterior of the house for free from April to November. And from May to October, on weekends, national holidays and during the summer holidays, tea is served on the porch of the Doshin residence.

    A Western restaurant located about six minutes by car from Hanamaki-Minami Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. The laid-back atmosphere is popular with all sorts of people. Their soft and succulent Japanese rice omelets made with local Hanamaki eggs are especially popular. You can choose to have it topped with tomato or demi-glace sauce. Pizzas made with Italian pizza flour baked in their pizza oven also come recommended. They have a wide variety available, including Margherita and Capricciosa pizzas you can enjoy drizzled with their house oil.

    ピザは釜焼き。お洒落な雰囲気のお店。オムライスが人気。ボリュームもあって味は確か。東京価格の4分の3くらい。花巻の中ではオススメのお店。私はホタテのカルパッチョが気に入りました!食前酒にティオペペがあるのが少し洒落てますね。

The Sakasho Ramen comes particularly recommended, featuring a spicy miso broth flavored with rich sake lees. The popular item is lavishly topped with shrimp, crab, and chashu pork fillet.

    A museum about a 15-minute drive from Hanamaki Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. It has a collection of 1,788 pieces of sake brewing equipment on display assembled with the help of Nanbu master brewers and brewery workers. The collection depicts the history of sake brewing and has been designated a National Important Cultural Property. In addition to an overview of the brewing process, it also displays sake drinking vessels from Japan and around the world, ancient documents, and items from daily life excavated from local sites.

    A mountain cottage located about 20 minutes by car from JR Hanamaki Station. It's where Takamura Kotaro spent seven years starting in 1945 and is adjacent to the Takamura Kotaro Museum. Built with wood gathered by villagers who admired Takamura, it has outer walls and another roof protecting the original house. The villa is about 25 square meters including the dirt floor, and it's built so roughly that snow blows in during the winter. It is preserved just as it was when Takamura lived there, with elements such as his self-portrait and a window in the shape of the Chinese character for light on the bathroom door.

It serves hand-made soba noodles made with 100% buckwheat flour and absolutely no binding agents to let you enjoy the inherent flavor of the buckwheat. Their popular Kamiyatororo features flavorful soba flour which gives a thick and sticky consistency. Another signature item is Tenzaru soba, featuring seasonal tempura and large tempura shrimp.

    This exhibition gallery is located approximately a 23-minute drive from JR Shin-Hanamaki Station. It opened in 2007. The building is a reconstruction of the former Hienuki District Office, and is said to have been modeled on Kenji Miyazawa's fairytale, The Cat's Office. The museum contains exhibits of works by Hayachine and Kenji Miyazawa, as well as molybdenum ore from Mount Nekoyama, which is said to have been the setting for Kaze no Matasaburo. Visitors can also see a reconstruction of the former Ishikawa Inn, which Miyazawa often stayed at.

    Lake Tase is located about a 20-minute drive from the Towa Interchange on the Kamaishi Expressway. It is an artificial lake, created by damming the Sarugaishi River, and it has been selected as one of the Top 100 Dam Lakes of Japan. Carp, crucian carp, and, in the winter, Japanese smelt and other freshwater fish are easily caught here. The lake is surrounded by a forested park, and visitors can enjoy the fresh greenery or autumn leaves, depending on the season. The Lake Water Festival, held at the end of July, features traditional performing arts, as well as canoeing, yachting, and other water sports, and at night, thousands of fireworks light up the sky.

    A long-established brewery in Towa-cho, Hanamaki City. It's at the foot of Mt. Hayachine, one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. They make miso and soy sauce while faithfully adhering to the knowledge and methods of their predecessors. Their rich and natural Shinise-no-Aji Tsuyu seasoning features a blend of bonito stock and soy sauce fermented for an extended period, without any artificial flavors. It comes recommended and has even been featured in the newspaper. Other popular items include Hon-kuradashi, Iwate inaka miso that has been aged for a long time in Akita cedar barrels and Hayachine Shoyu, soy sauce made with spring water from the mountain.

    About five minutes by car from Towa Interchange on the Kamaishi Expressway. An experience facility where you can learn about Narushima Washi, the northernmost Japanese washi paper with a tradition of more than 300 years. Narushima Washi is a simple Japanese paper made with a mix of paper mulberry bark and panicle hydrangea. Known for its unique, inviting texture, today it is mainly used for calligraphy paper, stationery, postcards, crafts, etc. Visitors can also join in a washi paper making experience where they create their own paper. The facility is also the production base of Narushima Washi, and you can observe the process in the winter when paper making is in full swing.

    Five minutes by car from Shin-Hanamaki Station. A restaurant located along the parking lot for the Miyazawa Kenji Memorial Museum. Modeled after the “Restaurant of Many Orders” appearing in Miyazawa’s fairy tales, diners can enjoy a meal while feeling like they are in the world of Miyazawa’s stories. Popular menu items include hearty Ihatov set meal, which comes with kakuni stewed cubes of Hakkin pork and seasonal tempura; as well as the Yamaneko suiton set—suiton, a soup with flour dumplings, is a local Hanamaki dish. Visitors can also purchase original merchandise themed after the works of Miyazawa, making the restaurant a must-visit for fans of the author.

    A Shinto shrine dedicated to the god Unedori Myojin located a five minute drive by car from Tono Station. The shrine is said to have been built after Minatoya Heibei, an Edo period merchant from Tono, prayed to Unedori Myojin at a torii gate in the village of Fudai. The shrine is famously believed to provide luck in the fulfillment of love and is visited by many couples. Red strips of cloth are sold at an unmanned stand on the grounds, and it is said that you will marry your sweetheart if you are able to tie one to a tree in front of the shrine using only your left hand. Accordingly, the trees on the shrine’s grounds are covered in red cloth strips, creating a mysterious and magical atmosphere.
