Sukayu Onsen is most famous for its “Sen-nin-buro” or 1,000-person bath. The giant bathtub made entirely of cypress in the enormous bathhouse that is 160 tatami mats in size overwhelms the beholder. The hot spring water is naturally acidic and contains sulfur, and bathing in the warm waters is regarded as a traditional remedy. Its primary benefits involve relieving nerve, muscular, and joint pain, and the facility was the first to be appointed as the People’s Recreation Hot Spring.

I have stayed in a couple of different hotels in Japan but no other compares to this one. It is not the most luxurious hotel but you really experienced the Japanese culture at this place. Only...

Opened in 2006, this art museum primarily houses and displays local cultural art of Aomori City and Aomori Prefecture. It is characterized by its unique architecture whereby the building is combined with the adjoining Sannai-Maruyama Jomon Era ruins. In the center of the museum is the Aleko Hall, where one can see in one glance all 4 masterpieces of the master Marc Chagall's 4 backdrops from the ballet ''Aleko'' until March 2021 (proposed). A broad range of standard exhibit items include western art, Japanese style paintings, modern art, and works by local artists. Take the city bus from Aomori Station and disembark at Kenritsu Bijutukan-Mae bus stop.

Sounds like the success of your visit depends on what is currently being exhibited. The first impression you get from the outside of the building is an impressive one. A grand building set on a...

Built as a place to promote Aomori’s local products in 1986, this facility also introduces guests to local industry and folk entertainment. The origin of the name ASPAM comes from the initials in a direct English translation of the facility’s Japanese name, which becomes Aomori, Sightseeing, Products, Mansion. From the observatory on the 13th floor visitors can enjoy a view of the urban center of Aomori, the Shimokita, Tsugaru, and Natsudomari peninsulas, Mutsu Bay, and the Aomori Bay Bridge. Be sure to take in the incredible 360-degree panoramic view.

Just visited this building to get some souvenirs. It was very quiet and I ended up buying stuff in and close to the station! You could hear Nebuta festivals music in the building which was great!

A museum located five minutes on foot from Aomori Station. This museum ship houses displays on its service as a railway liner since it began operating in 1908 from when it carried numerous passengers and cargo to Hakodate until it ceased service in 1988. The Hakkodamaru, which served as a ferry for the longest period of time, is preserved almost as if it were still in service. On self-guided tours around the ship visitors can enter the bridge and descend into the engine room.

It was a fabulous experience to see how this ferry was used to transport people and goods around the waters of Northern Japan.

About an 11-minute walk from Asamushi Onsen Station, this aquarium is at the northern tip of Honshu and overlooks Aomori Bay. With a large, free parking lot and the Asamushi hot springs nearby, it is convenient and accessible enough to draw in many visitors. The aquatic exhibits are crafted to mimic natural conditions closely. The “Waters of Mutsu Bay” is a tunnel-shaped tank that imitates Mutsu Bay, offering a view of farm-raised scallops and such. There are events and shows every season. The powerful and graceful performances of bottlenose dolphins and Pacific white-sided dolphins are interactive and particularly popular with visitors.

Cute little aquarium with a good range of aquatic animals and comfortable for a short trip. Cosy, family oriented.

A market established over 40 years ago famous for its nokke-don seafood rice bowl. Here you can buy meats, delicatessen, seafood, and other fresh, delicious ingredients you'll only find in a market in Aomori. The nokke-don is a rice bowl dish which allows customers to roam the market and freely add toppings from the various stalls here.

This is a local cuisine restaurant in front of JR Aomori Station, where one can try fresh seafood including scallops of Mutsu Bay. “Kenoshiru Ramen” is a blend of local Aomori “kenoshiru” cuisine with a miso-based ramen. Aomori's signature “Hotate Kaiyaki Miso” (scallop baked in its shell with miso) and “Hotate Fry” (fried scallop) set meals are popular with tourists who come to taste the deftly-prepared scallops which are neither frozen or boiled. In the interior wafts the atmosphere of an old-fashioned eatery, which is even easy to drop in by unaccompanied.

The best eal I ate in Japan. Cozy local place to eat local scallops fried on butter or scallop sashimi.

Here is the largest Jomon village ruins in Japan which was discovered in an exploration conducted in 1992. It was designated as a National Special Historic Site in 2000. The large pillar-supported buildings that suddenly appear in a vast field were built by erecting chestnut wood pillars in holes dug into the ground. It is thought to have been a building of rectangle shape with six pillars with a large, high floor. You can also see pit dwellings and pillar constructions as well as the special feature of many earthen figures.

This renaissance-style building, surrounded by rich greenery, was built to be the Aomori City Obayashi Ward office building in 1908, and is a city-designated tangible cultural treasure. The garden contains more than a hundred varieties of trees, including Yoshino cherry, hickory, and Hiba cypress, which provide a full view of the beauty of the four seasons."

Aomori Areas

around-area-map

Centuries-old stories of samurai at Kakunodate and the remains of millennia-old archaeological sites including the likes of Isedotai invite history buffs to delve into Aomori’s fascinating history. As the most northern prefecture on the Japanese mainland, Aomori enjoys a cooler climate, which makes it a welcome escape from the southern cities for combining castles, art galleries, and summer festivals with the great outdoors.
