Tsugaru Kanayama Pottery, which began in Goshogawara City in 1985, uses clay from the Great Kanayama Reservoir as the raw material for pottery production, which is fired in wood-fired kilns. There are several kilns, and because they are used frequently, new kilns are built every 7 to 8 years. The process of making pottery begins with the refining of the clay, and the firing process depends on the technique used to fill the kiln. The kilns are fired four to five times a month in three 24-hour shifts.

This is a very good tour of the kilns as they were used 100s of years ago. The old firing area is very interesting and has a lot to see. The briefing is better than most we have had on this trip...

"In the Konya-machi district west of Hirosaki Castle, there were more than 100 navy blue houses built by Tsugaru Nobumasa in 1694 (Genroku 7). Nearby, the ""Tsugaru Natural Aizome Kawasaki Dyeing Factory"" was established between 1781 and 1801, and has continued to preserve the traditional indigo dyeing method. The building, built around 1800, is a designated building of Hirosaki City, and although some parts have been repaired due to fire and typhoons, the overall layout and facilities remain intact. It is open for tours."

Aomori Areas

around-area-map

Centuries-old stories of samurai at Kakunodate and the remains of millennia-old archaeological sites including the likes of Isedotai invite history buffs to delve into Aomori’s fascinating history. As the most northern prefecture on the Japanese mainland, Aomori enjoys a cooler climate, which makes it a welcome escape from the southern cities for combining castles, art galleries, and summer festivals with the great outdoors.
