This soothing footbath is part of the Tokachigawa Onsen Guide Center and Tokachi Nature Center a 20-minute drive away by car from Obihiro Station. Tokachigawa Onsen is a moor (plant-derived) hot spring, quite uncommon in Japan, and contains a lot of plant organic matter. Compared with regular mineral based hot springs the quality of the spring water is rarely found anywhere in the world. The hot spring was said to be called the ‘Medicine marsh’ by the Ainu people, and was designated as a Hokkaido heritage site in 2004. Anyone is welcome to dip their feet into the footbath to try out the water at the south side of Center for free.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
