This historic museum has preserved the former Abashiri Prison barracks as an outdoor museum. It was completely renovated in 2010. The virtual prison movie titled ''Forests Where Inmates in a Red Prison Uniform Worked'' is a must-see digital stereophonic theater experience focusing on the harsh working conditions of the erstwhile prisoners captured with the latest technology. One can explore the facility on a Guided Prison Tour, or actually eat the food the prisoners were given with the Experience Prison Food encounter. Two of the structures, 8 wards, transferred here are treasured as Japan's Important Cultural Properties.

This is so much more than just a museum about the prison. It covers quite a bit of Hokkaido history, telling the sad tale of how prisoners were used to help build roads and infrastructure in...

Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum, which is located on Tentozan in Abashiri City, is a tourist facility based on drift ice and the creatures who live in the Sea of Okhotsk. Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum has the biggest projection mapping in Hokkaido and displays the mysterious creatures such as the clione which live in the Sea of Okhotsk. The high-definition five-screen theater which includes a 300-inch screen is also impressive. One very popular experience is freezing a wet towel when touching the ice directly on the drift ice simulation terrace. At the highest observation terrace, 360-degree panoramic views are an amazing sight and have been designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty since 1938.

Here you can get tourist information and buy local farm produce and processed goods. The drift ice sightseeing & icebreaker ship Aurora, which runs from the latter half of January through to the end of March every year, departs from a dock on the Abashiri River in front of the Road Station. Well organized site. Sign boards in English provide a lot of information. Interesting to see how prisons evolved and changed over the years. Well worth the visit.

Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park is a large park with a total area of 12.5 hectares. Every year, in May and early June, around 1.2 million tulips belonging to 120 different varieties are in bloom in the Park; the array of different colors is a wonderful sight, and the scent of the flowers is just as impressive. One particularly striking aspect of the Park is the raised flowerbed, made from local stone and containing a mix of smaller tulip varieties, which greets visitors just inside the entrance, allowing visitors to view the tulips at eye-level. The Park also provides a unique opportunity to see special multi-blooming tulips. The annual Tulip Fair, held each year at the time when the tulips are in bloom, attracts larger numbers of visitors.

The flowers were in full bloom. Some were even withered, i heard it bloomed earlier this year. We spent an hour plus here taking lots of pictures

The Shiretoko Sightseeing Boat operates daily from the end of April to the end of October. The primitive landscape seen from the ship is an exceptional view. Due to its large size the ship is stable and does not rock so much. You can enjoy the scenery leisurely from either a non-reserved seat on the first floor or a reserved seat on the second floor, but the observation deck is recommended if you want to take great photos. It is about 50 minutes by bus from JR Shiretoko Shari Station. It takes about two hours by car from Memanbetsu Airport.

The Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples is the only folk museum dedicated to the peoples of the North in Japan, and one of only a handful of museums of its kind in the world. The Museum displays the results of extensive research on the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of Hokkaido and also of other Northern peoples in other parts of the world. The Museum holds frequent lectures and seminars, and the Museum shop has an impressive range of books about Northern peoples. The Museum is situated around 10–15 minutes’ drive from Abashiri Station. To reach the Museum by bus, take the Kanko Meguri tourist bus service and get off at the “Hoppou Minzoku Hakubutsukan” bus stop.

"The name ""Wakka"" means ""fresh water"" in Ainu language and the name comes from the phrase ""Wakka-O-I,"" meaning ""a place with fresh water."" It stems from the fact that there was a pond from which fresh water gushes forth near the center of the shoal of Lake Saroma. The road that leads for the shoal is called the Ryugyu Highway and has long been a beloved as a great place to see both the sea and the lake. More than 300 varieties of flowering plants in the area, which is a breeding ground for wild birds. The flowers reach peak bloom between late June and mid July most years."

Go early for a good spot! Space is limited if you want a front row space, so if you like taking pictures, definitely go early.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
