This valley is all that remains of an ancient volcanic crater, and is lined with geysers and fumaroles. The hot springs sourced here run to Noboribetsu Onsen. The foaming, boiling scenery led to it being called Demon-dwelling Hell. It's also a perfect autumn leaf viewing spot, when the hillsides are painted red with autumn colors.

Rented a car and took a day trip from Niseko to Noboribetsu. Stopped at Lake Toya for lunch before proceeding to Jigokudani and a good thing too because the town was pretty dead and because it was...

This is the third largest caldera lake in Japan with an area of the ninth largest lake nationally in Shikotsu-Toya National Park. While visitors can experience the magnificence of nature, it is also a hot spring resort with an abundance of hot water and many inns and hotels. It is one of Hokkaido’s most popular resort areas where you can enjoy activities such as pleasure boats, canoes and dairy experiences.

Breathtaking views and a pleasant drive around the lake. Plenty of places to stop along the way. I suggest stopping at Sobetsu-Cho for the waterfall and also visit the Windsor Hotel Resort. Cherry...

The Hokkaido Brown Bear was traditionally worshipped by the Ainu people as Kim-un Kamuy, the “Spirit who Dwells in the Mountains.” The Noboribetsu Bear Park has succeeded in breeding Hokkaido Brown Bears, and currently has around 100 bears. The Park also features an observation platform with views over Lake Kuttara, and Yuttara Village where visitors can experience Ainu culture. The Donan Bus service from JR Noboribetsu Station takes around 20 minutes to reach the Park. By car, the Park is approximately 10 minutes’ drive from the Noboribetsu Interchange on the Hokkaido Expressway.

I’d give this place a miss. It’s in no way setup for conservation or looking after the bears. It’s just an entertainment business. The areas the bears are kept in are small and lacking...

This roadside station is located along National Route 230 that runs through Rusutsu-mura. It is placed in a scenic area where you can view Yoteizan, nicknamed Ezo Fuji, from within the facility. The restaurants there have menus that use local ingredients. In addition, at the direct sales store for agricultural, forestry and fishery products, they cheaply offer fresh vegetables harvested in the village as well as processed foods. Rusutsu-mura is known as the setting for the nursery rhyme Akai Kutsu (Red Shoes), and Akai Kutsu Furusato park is located right next to the roadside station 230 Rusutsu. In the park, besides a bathroom corner with a triangular roof where the melody of the children's song Akai Kutsu is played, there is also a bust of the famous pioneer of shiatsu (finger pressure) massage Tokujiro Namikoshi, where many people take commemorative photos.

A mountain pass 835 meters above sea level located in Kimobetsu Town, Abuta County, Hokkaido. Located on the border of Sapporo City's Minami Ward, the pass is a major road along National Route 230. Roadside Station Boyonakayama, located at the peak of the pass, is a rest area where drivers can park and take a break. Visitors to the area can also take in the view of Mt. Yotei and the seasonal mountain scenery.

    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Hokkaido Noboribetsu-shi Noboribetsuonsencho
This hot spring area, one of the country’s foremost, is blessed with an abundance of high quality hot spring waters. There are nine varieties of source springs found in the area, each with its own coloration and purported health benefits, including sulfur springs, chloride springs, alum springs, sulfate springs, melanterite springs, iron springs, acidic springs, alkaline springs, and radium springs. In the indigenous Ainu language, “nupur pet” means “white, cloudy river” or “dark colored river;” believed to be the phrase from which the Japanese place name “Noboribetsu” is derived. It also alludes to the area’s abundance of hot water, which is so great that it even changes the color of the river. Many people come here to enjoy the area’s distinctive and atmospheric hot spring hotels and inns, and to enjoy a day trip spent sampling different bathhouses. The area offers plenty of opportunities for sightseeing, including picturesque Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley), Oyunuma Pond, and Tessen Pond, plus destinations like famous scenery, historic sites, and theme parks.

This is a fresh seafood restaurant in Tomakomai, Hokkaido. Since it's so close to Tomakomai port, it's very popular for the Marutoma Bowl made with fresh seasonal fish, and Hokki Curry, made with Hokki clams of which Tomakomai has the largest catch. Not only are the meals filling and cheap, the fact that it's so popular with locals has made it a major tourist spot.

We arrived around 11am. Already queued up for 20 mins before we get our seats. The queue became so long after 12pm. Shop will be close for 10 days August. Around 10-20 Aug

Lake Toya and Nakajima Island is a crater lake formed through volcanic activity about 100,000 years ago. Cruise schedules change between summer and winter; during the summer cruises depart every 30 minutes and in winter they depart every one hour. You can enjoy the abundance of nature from the lunch cruises which depart three times a day, the summer fireworks cruise, and the Nakajima Island cruise.

This is an interesting and quirky cruise around the lake. We went on the castle boat. Because it was winter we didnt stop at the island. Its fun.

This aquarium is in Noboribetsu. Built on the theme of Northern European Romance and Marine Fantasies, the symbol of the park is its castle modeled on Denmark's Egeskov Castle. There's also a petting pool where visitors can touch skates and horseshoe crabs, a Ferris wheel, merry go round and other attractions throughout the park.

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
