Otokoyama Sake Museum is a museum operated by Otokoyama, a sake brewer in Asahikawa City. The exhibits include valuable materials and literature from the Edo period, ukiyo-e prints depicting Otokoyama, as well as vats and other sake making tools. There is free tasting and the museum also sells sake from the brewery. You can also pump up the underground water at the facility to take home free of charge. The sake made with underground water sourced from the perpetual snow in the Mt. Taisetsu range has won numerous awards both in Japan and overseas.

Its a relatively small place which can easily be covered in 30 mins max (including tasting). I can imagine that it would be more interesting when the sake is actually being made but if you go at the...

A huge garden sprawling the west side of Asahikawa Station, rather unusual in Japan. Serving as a pedestrian path connecting to the rest of the city, a flood plain splays on the south side with the Chubetsu River running through it. The garden itself is divided into several theme-based areas such as a grass garden, flower garden, and terrace. The garden's plants are maintained by dedicated gardeners and events are held here periodically.

  • Kita no Arashiyama
    Travel / Tourism
    Hokkaido Asahikawa-shi Asahigaoka 1-3
"The collective term from the area at the foot of Arashiyama situated west of Asahikawa. The area's sprawling residential district is reminiscent of Karuizawa's holiday home belt. The area is also dotted with pottery studios, and accordingly it is known to locals as ""ceramics village."" It is rare for pottery studios to gather in one location, and it is said this area is the only such place in Hokkaido. The potters here are known for creating unique, distinctive pieces not bound by tradition; many allow visitors to view work in the studios and offer pottery making activities. Originally the area was known as ""Arashiyama Togei no Sato"" (""Arashiyama Ceramics Village""), but after an increasing number of glassware studios, dyeing studios, galleries, and cafes took root here, its name was changed to ""Kita no Arashiyama"" (""Arashiyama of the North"") due to its resemblance to the Arashiyama area in Kyoto."
  • Taisetsu-gama
    Travel / Tourism
    Hokkaido Asahikawa-shi Asahigaoka 2-9
The oldest potter in Asahikawa. They continue to make pieces that show the nature of Hokkaido and the changing of the seasons. They use the Crystal Glaze technique, which was passed on to the third generation of Taisetsugama and was inspired by the idea of snow and ice. Various conditions including the composition of the glaze and the temperature of the kiln cause parts of the glaze to appear as crystal. The inconsistency of the amount of crystallization is part of the attraction. In their workshop, surrounded by vibrant colors including the fresh greens of spring or the changing autumn colors, they offer workshops in making teacups and coffee cups.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
