    Hokkaido Obihiroshi Inadachou East 2-6
A garden of approximately 79,000 square meters open to the public which is also a farm importing, producing and selling trees, operated by “Manabe Garden Nurseries”. It is well-known for its production of conifers, unusual in Japan. The garden has three differently themed areas—a European garden, a Japanese garden and a landscaped garden for you to stroll around. We hope you enjoy the scenery which is as magical as if you were lost in a fairytale land.

Big garden with many varieties of plants and trees. Typical Japanese landscape including a children playground . Cafe is nicely decorated.

Rokka no Mori is a garden run by Rokkatei, a confectionery manufacturer closely associated with Hokkaido. A wide variety of flowers—including the “Six Flowers of Tokachi” that appear on Rokkatei confectionery wrappers—bloom in the garden at different times of year, making this an extremely beautiful place to visit. With the Naoyuki Sakamoto Commemorative Hall (dedicated to the artist who created the images seen on Rokkatei confectionery wrappers), several art galleries, and a rest house (with restaurant and shop), there is plenty to see and do as you enjoy strolling round the garden. Please note that Rokka no Mori is closed during the winter months.

This was the 5th and final garden we visited during our recent holiday in Obihiro. I have to say its really quite difficult to determine which of the 8 gardens making up the Hokkaido Garden Path is...

At Sahoro Bear Mountain the largest species of Hokkaido brown bear can be observed in an environment close to their natural habitat. You can get up close with the bears moving about in the forest from behind the safety of the reinforced windows on the bear watching bus and you can watch the bears go about their day from the relaxed setting of the high-rise walkway. You can also get to touch the bears through the glass of the special viewing area located in the middle of Bear Mountain; a truly memorable experience!

The bears are free (almost...) and visitors are able to watch from promanande on the trees and from a special glass house. Although a bit expensive, it is worth it. Pay attention - if you have a...

This confectionery factory of fresh Japanese sweets can boast the largest factory floor space in the country with a total site area of 33,119 square meters, a building area of 16,582.31 square meters, one basement floor and four floors above ground. This cultural facility exhibits materials related to the former National Railway Shihoro line, which was decommissioned in 1987. The museum is located in the remains of the former Nukabira Station, and displays rails and trains actually used on the line. Inside the building, you can watch a film taken from the driver's seat back when the line was in use, showing the run from Obihiro Station to Nukabira Station. There are exhibits of rail maps, explanations of the history of the Shihoro line, pictures of construction, and track maintenance tools as well, all recreating that time in Shihoro's history. The authentic enamel station name signs and nostalgic timetables are hugely popular with rail fans.

Founded in 1910, this shrine in Obihiro City, Hokkaido is dedicated to three gods of land reclamation. All of them are associated with national land, and because the shrine faces National Route 38, they are also honored for disaster prevention and traffic safety. A traditional dondo-yaki event is held on January 15th every year where participants burn New Year's pine decorations and sacred shrine ropes; these days, they also immolate votive plaques, talismans, and household altars. In February the shrine holds an event marking Setsubun, the holiday at the end of winter. They also conduct an exorcism of bad luck called yakubarai.

With not much to do apart from the racing area, this is a nice little shrine thats easy to find in Obihiro. Easy to walk around and friendly staff. There early (around 10:00am) not many people...

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
