The pictures by which Otaru Canal has become famous nationwide were taken from this bridge. It was once a bridge for the port freight railway, and was built when the canal was only halfway reclaimed. Famous as the most active place on the canal, it's common for visitors to take pictures here against the backdrop of the canal. It's filled with visitors and photographers year round, no matter the season.

    Hokkaido Otaru-shi Shioya 1-27-23
The boats and rafts on this exploration tour glide through secluded area of the coast, the blue cave. Customers can explore the aqua blue cave located between Shioya and Otamoi. This playground, originally known by the nickname of Nukedooshi, is in a secluded area that is only reachable by small boats and sea kayaks. One of the characteristics of the tour is that it is less susceptible to the wind than the alternative route from Otaru Port. In addition to being able to enjoy the comfort of a pleasure boat, customers also have the choice of feeling closer to the sea in a towed raft. The raft is an active adventure ride with the surrounding scenery and the sea spray from the waves, so if customers don't want to get wet or who have weak legs., it is recommended that they ride in the pleasure boat.

"A long-standing sushi restaurant located on Otaru's Sushi Street; the owner opened up shop here in order to continue to hone his craft in the sushi mecca that is Otaru. Making use of Otaru's uniquely fresh seafood delicacies, the restaurant serves vaunted sushi lovingly crafted one piece at a time. Customers rave about the extremely fresh sushi you can enjoy to your heart's content in the spacious establishment. Otaru was once the location of over 130 sushi restaurants and is one of Japan's top ""sushi towns."" As one of the establishments which helped Otaru to achieve this status as well as one of the founding members of the Otaru Sushi Street Restaurant Association, this established restaurant is bringing old style sushi into the present."

A satellite shop of Otaru glassware company Kitaichi Glass. Operating out of an old-fashioned building facing National Route 5, here you can try glass engraving. The shop's sandblasting class involves blasting sand onto the surface of glass to etch out your very own original design and is easy even for elementary school-aged children to do. You can get your creation that very day, perfect for making a memory with family or a friend. The shop also offers a glass bead arranging class in which you combine your favorite glass beads along with other parts to create a necklace or bracelet. The shop is also located a little away from the popular Otaru Canal, ensuring you can enjoy a quieter, more relaxing experience here.

We enjoyed this workshop very much. You apply stencil stickers on the glass of your choice (you pay separate fee for the glass) and eventually use a sand blaster to etch the glass. The final result...

This city park is located ten minutes from Otaru Interchange, or 15 minutes' walk from Otaru Station. It is known locally as Otaru's Flower Spot, and is home to a variety of blossoming flowers such as cherry and Otaru City's flower, azalea, as well as wisteria and Siberian crabapple. The best time to see the cherry blossoms is usually from early to mid-May. There are approximately 900 flowering trees, including the classic Yoshino Cherry and Ezo Cherry, Hokkaido's own variety of cherry tree, the North Japanese hill cherry. There is also a viewing platform on the small hill, which overlooks the city. Inside the park, there are azalea planted everywhere, and the garden is carpeted in their brilliant colors from mid-May to early June, which coincides with the cherry blossom-viewing season.

This feature one of the viewing place for Cherry Blossom in Otaru. However, it seems not in full bloom and only seen some cherry trees. Good to take a walk here if visited Otaru.

The Shukutsu route is convenient for visitors who would also like to make a trip to the Otaru Aquarium and Nishin Goten (herring castles), and the Otamoi route, which offers views of the scenery created by the cliffs of the Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park.

"This conveyor-belt sushi restaurant embodies the concept of ""making delicious food even more affordable!"" In addition to Otaru, it has stores all over Hokkaido, including Sapporo, Chitose and Asahikawa. They are consistently pursuing the most delicious flavors of the season, and the restaurant's main feature is that it focuses on seafood locally sourced in Hokkaido. There is both counter seating and table seating available in the vibrant atmosphere of the restaurant, so customers can come here as a family or with friends and partners. It is also not uncommon for customers to come alone in pursuit of the thickly sliced fresh sushi."

"This specialty music box store is located facing Sakaimachi Street. The historic building was built in 1893, and Kaimeiro Brand music boxes are exhibited and sold here. It has been designated as a historical building of Otaru City, and has a mysterious atmosphere which evokes a sense of nostalgia. This restaurant is located ten minutes' walk from Otaru Station, at the back of Otaru Historical Plaza, which was created to reproduce Otaru's historic past. Visitors can enjoy local Hokkaido food from the sea and mountains in the store's historic 120-year-old assembly hall. The restaurant's recommended menu item is a specially made sukiyaki meal that uses luxurious Tokachi beef sourced from Hokkaido. Tokachi beef, which has no odor and is firm, is perfectly matched with the restaurant's secret sauce. The restaurant's featured seafood rice bowl of the day, which is packed with seasonal ingredients from all over Hokkaido is also very popular. On the second floor, there are also accommodations have been designed with the good old days of Japan in mind, and it is also possible to stay here in the French Auberge-style and enjoy a full-course beach cuisine meal with your stay.

  • Otaru Historical Plaza

    Hokkaido Otaru-shi Sakaimachi 2-12
"This retro-style area is located facing Sakaimachi Street. It conveys the glory of Otaru's historic past to the present era and embodies the concept of ""Cityscape is industry. Cityscape is culture."" In the time of the early Showa, business leaders, conglomerates and the great merchants known as Japanese shipping kings established a gorgeous mansion atop the hill behind the plaza. So that, it is said that the road leading to the hill was named ""Success-slope"", and the bottom of the slope was named ""Pre-success"" with the meaning of being one step short of success.I The area surrounding the plaza is wrapped in a retro atmosphere, almost as if it had slipped into the past, and first-time visitors are said to experience the nostalgia. Some of the buildings that have deteriorated with the passing of time and household items have been collected and restored to display the lifestyles of the people of the time."

This natural stone shop is easily recognized by its solid appearance reminiscent of a museum. This shop of 'Kura-zukuri' (earthen-wall storehouse style), built in harmony with the Otaru cityscape, contains natural stones collected from all over the world. The shop's most recommended items are its original deep sea-blue glass bead accessories. Silver foil glitters like glass deep beneath the sea, and the accessories, with their healing effect easily match any clothing. There is also a free oracle game that can tell customers which kind of stone most suits them.

"A seafood rice bowl restaurant facing Sakaimachi-dori Street, one of the most popular streets to walk in Otaru. Situated midway between Asakusa Bridge, known for its scenic view of Otaru Canal; and Kitaichi Glass, here customers can enjoy seasonal seafood delivered straight from the port. The first Donburi-Chaya restaurant was opened over 20 years ago in Nijo Market, known as the ""kitchen of Sapporo."" Harnessing its location close to a fishing port, customers rave that the restaurant serves the freshest Pacific herring, flounder, sea urchin, sailfin poacher, and other seafood delicacies. Particularly popular is the restaurant's luxurious Marusen-don, which consists of several smaller rice bowls, including the salmon and roe ""oyakodon"" rice bowl; a raw sea urchin and scallop rice bowl; the Tokusen Kani-don topped with snow crab claw meat; and a botan shrimp and tuna rice bowl. Diners who choose this extravagant meal can fully experience all the seafood delights Hokkaido has to offer in a single sitting."

I loved eating here. The food was delicious and we were also able to pray upstairs. The prices are absolutely reasonable and its in the midst of all the attractions.

This is a store directly managed by the long-established Hokkaido Sweets Snow Brand Parlor. The store, which faces Otaru's classic walking course, Sakaimachi Street, sells ice cream, soft cream and other sweets. The store's popular soft cream features a smooth texture and rich milky flavor. It is the perfect place to rest your feet while walking around Otaru. There is a cafe area in the store where families can comfortably relax with small children, and customers can sit and chat. Many people stop by the store to buy souvenirs, since the store also sells cheesecake made with plenty of Camembert cheese, fragrant vanilla Baumkuchen and other sweets.

We bought a lot of things to bring home here. They offer Royce chocolate, calbee chips and many other local snacks. They also have different hand made locally souvenirs.

Enwrapped in the old-fashioned atmosphere of the museum building located 100 meters away from the Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building, visitors can enjoy the ""music of the heavens"" of the music boxes in the collection up close. Filled with historic and valuable antique music boxes, visitors can also view an Aeolian pipe organ made in England in 1908. The first self-playing pipe organ brought into Japan, the organ still resounds with the same beautiful sounds today as when it was first built."

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
