    In the Otaru area, where there are many sushi restaurants, Sushiko is popular with a reputation for reasonable and delicious food. It is housed in a 90-year old storehouse that has plenty of character. Set meals range from 1,000–3700 yen, and it is also easy to enjoy Otaru sushi from 100 yen for one hand-rolled piece. On the first floor, there are table and bar seats while there is a raised tatami-floor seating area that can accommodate 16 people on the second floor. It is also reassuring that prices are clearly stated with no market prices.

    Located in Shakotan Town, Shakotan County, Hokkaido, Restaurant Misaki is open from late April to fall each year. The restaurant owner is a sea urchin fisherman and ensures that no additives are used in any of their signature sea urchin dishes. Especially popular is their raw red horse-dung sea urchin on rice which is served between June and August each year and limited to only 15 dishes per day! It’s a well-known restaurant regularly covered by the press, and often has long queues of eager customers waiting outside in the morning.

    A seafood restaurant of a well-established fish store located in Yoichi Town, Yoichi County, Hokkaido. Kakizaki Shoten is a popular restaurant where you can get fresh Hokkaido seafood at great prices. Not only is it frequented by locals but it is also widely visited by backpackers, bikers, and tourists. Their specialty dish is the seafood rice bowl topped with plenty of seafood and tasty looking salmon roe. Depending on the season you can also enjoy limitedly available dishes such as sea urchin and northern shrimp, in addition to their grilled fish meals and sashimi. It’s such a popular restaurant you can’t get away from the queues at lunch time.

    We went there for lunch after going for Nikka Whisky tour. Very good seafood at very cheap prices! We had grilled fish, uni, seaweed salad and salmon meal. All were really nice! One thing to note is...

    Wakadori Jidai Naruto is a sushi and deep fried chicken shop famous for its deep fried half chicken, an Otaru specialty. The half chicken is heavily seasoned with salt and pepper and deep fried in very hot oil, creating a crispy skin with juicy meat, a veritable feast! Eaten together with rice makes for an excellent meal. The wakadori sushi set with deep fried half chicken, seven pieces of sushi and clear soup is a popular dish. The shop has a friendly atmosphere, people eating alone do not feel out of place, and take-outs are possible too. The nearest station is Otaru Station.

The restaurant’s signature dish, raw sea urchin rice bowl, is a gloriously simple mix of sea urchin, nori (dried seaweed) and rice. Shakotan sea urchins are served for a limited time only from between June and August. They also have plenty of other dishes on the menu to enjoy such as sea urchin and salmon roe rice bowl, and sashimi set meals. The restaurant is easily recognizable with its blue roof on white walls.

    Converted from an old banya, or simple lodging house, is this impressive looking restaurant located in Shakotan Town, Shakotan County, Hokkaido. The restaurant owner is himself a fisherman and inside the restaurant you can find the place decked out with all sorts of fishing paraphernalia. Their signature dish, red sea urchin rice bowl made with the prized ezo-bafun uni (short-spined sea urchin), is only available from the middle of June to late August. You can enjoy the melting taste of this sweet, rich sea urchin. Other popular dishes include their large seafood rice bowl with masses of seafood packed on top of the rice. The restaurant is only open from late April through to early November.

    This restaurant which has set meals ready to order is located in Otaru City in Hokkaido. “Delicious and cheap” is the motto of this restaurant which is loved by local people. The volume is perfect even at such reasonable prices, and besides the standard “katsu don” (a rice bowl topped with a pork cutlet) and the sashimi (sliced raw fish) set meal, they also offer a special limited lunch menu. The most popular dish served is the luxurious “Sake Oyakodon”, a bowl of rice topped with salmon and salmon roe marinated in soy sauce. Large portions of rice are also available at no charge. A lot of tourists visit the restaurant in addition to regular customers, and it is also popular among students on school excursions.
