    Hokkaido Sapporoshi Kita-ku Kitahachijounishi 5
Hokkaido University, which first opened as Sapporo Agriculture College in 1876. After that, it has made a great contribution not only to agriculture, but also to the development of Hokkaido. The words Professor Clark left for his students on his departure from Sapporo “Boys be ambitious!” remain as the university’s motto today. The university grounds are enormous, the Sapporo campus being approximately 1.77 million square meters, which is the size of 38 Tokyo Dome baseball stadiums. Walking around the nature-filled campus with its avenues lined with poplars and elm forests is an enjoyable experience.

Lining both sides of the roads, leading towards Hokkaido University are multi hue coloured maple trees, its leaves in crimson orange, stunning red, brown, maroon & yellow. Gingko nut trees in bright...

Sapporo, Hokkaido, Higashi-ku, Moerenuma Park 1-1
Moerenuma Park is a comprehensive park in northeast Sapporo for which globally renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi created the basic design. Based on the concept of “the whole being a single sculpture,” it was recommended to build on a site where 2.7 million tons of waste had been put in landfill, and the park opened in 2005. Hills with geometric forms, fountains, and play equipment have been arranged in a vast site equivalent to 40 Tokyo Domes, allowing a landscape that fuses art and nature to be enjoyed. Another attraction is that seasonal pastimes can be enjoyed with cherry blossoms in the spring, water activities in the summer, autumn leaves in the fall, and cross country skiing in the winter.

Got here in the evening, so only managed to visit the pyramid, and walk around a little. The pyramid is beautiful, with lovely views from the top. The park is also lovely, with lots of sculptures, if...

Sapporo Dome is located in the southeast of the city and is Sapporo’s largest all-weather indoor dome. It is one of a few stadiums in the world that are home to two professional teams in soccer and baseball, which are Consadole Sapporo and the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. It is widely used as a transmission point for sports and entertainment, holding global sporting competitions and large-scale concerts with more than 50,000 people. There are also dome tours that allow you to see behind the scenes.

Joined a Japanese only language tour, but we got to see behind the scenes. It is an amazing structure and worth the visit. It is a bit out of the way and tours dont run if there is an event.

There are four separate areas which are the Farm Village, the Sea Village, the Mountain Village and the City and you can walk through each village to experience the different atmospheres. At the Frontier Village Restaurant in the museum, you can eat the simple but delicious “Imo Mochi” and the restaurant’s original Tondenhei (Settlers’) Set Meal.

It gives a great impression of how a historic community looked like. Be it a town, fishermen or mountain village. The only downside is the following:we were visiting in December, with quite some...

Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill is one of Hokkaido's best tourist attractions. Sheep are kept on the rolling hills where the lush greenery dazzles the eyes, and the heart is warmed by the idyllic countryside scenery. A statue of Dr. William Smith Clark who served as the first vice-principal at Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University) can be seen on the observation deck. It’s a popular place to come and have your photograph taken. At the Hitsujigaoka Rest House you can have some Mongolian-style mutton barbecue food.

Sadly, I was there at a time where the lavender was not growing. They have a very nice shop with various goods made of lavender. There is also a very good Mutton restaurant, if you are into that...

    Hokkaido Sapporoshi Minami-ku Jouzankei 608
A day trip hot spring bath facility in the Jozankei hot spring area in Sapporo City famous for its Indian curry with baths constantly replenished kake-nagashi style from the source. Fresh, piping hot water direct from the underground spring is sent straight to the baths; the waters have beautifying, smoothing, and moisturizing effects on the skin. The so-called Velvet Bath is popular with women. The three spacious outdoor baths built in the middle of the wilderness are some of the biggest in Japan. These stone baths are designed for long, relaxing soaks; at night, they're illuminated, and you can enjoy the magical atmosphere created. The facility also offers a variety of activity sets which include hot spring baths. You can enjoy canoeing, camping, snow shoeing in winter, and other fun activities.

Went on a weekday afternoon. Not crowded at all...about 10 or so people in the mens baths. Remember to bring small towels to clean yourself; if not, these can be purchased at the counter before...

This Genghis Khan (lamb BBQ) restaurant located within “Hakkou Gakuen” farm in Toyohira Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido, has an open terrace. In summer you can enjoy charcoal grill Genghis Khan at your table outside. The meat is not the usual lamb but only mutton more than one-year old is served. The meat has a good balance of fat giving it a rich taste which goes perfectly with the ginger and spicy sauce. In addition to the vegetables and rice ball set menu there is also an all-you-can-eat plan.

Gengiskan/Lamb BBQ is the signature food for Sapporo and there are plenty of places downtown for the tourists. This is in the suburbs - and this is where locals-in-the-know go. A rambling cottage...

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
