A Mashu ware pottery studio standing along the Akan Odan Road 80 minutes from Kushiro Airport. Using one of the largest anagama kilns in Hokkaido, the studio makes and sells its wares. The studio's celadon porcelain, modeled after the depths of Lake Mashu, are notable for a rich beauty which has been praised for embodying the mysterious air of the lake. The studio has gained extensive attention and has held solo exhibitions in the Matsuya department store in Tokyo's Ginza as well as in New York's trendy Chelsea neighborhood. A not insignificant number of people come here from far and wide seeking pieces modeled after the abundant changes of the seasons.

Hokkaido Kawakami-gun Teshikaga Cho Kussharo 420-1
This horse-riding facility is located 30 minutes from Lake Mashu. Visitors can experience horse trekking through the vast natural surroundings that are the symbol of Hokkaido. The horse trekking course, which is a popular experience, is a program that begins with going to meet the horses on the pasture. Included in the course is the desire for visitors to learn about the horses they are going to be riding. Because the farm is open all year round, visitors can even enjoy the crisp white snow and the horses' fluffy winter coats. Visitors can also challenge themselves with Canadian canoeing, accompanied by a guide on the private beach of Lake Kussharo.

Hokkaido Kawakami-gun Teshikaga Cho Kussharo Kotan
This guide company, which provides nature, canoe and kayak tour guides, was established in 1995. Customers can enjoy canoe tours during the green season from spring to fall, and snow shoe tours in the winter. The tours cover various fields, such as the wide views of Lake Kussharo, the headwaters of Kushiro River, Mt. Mokoto, Lake Mashu and Kussharo Caldera. Customers can also watch the swans that come here from Siberia to pass the winter. The Midori Bridge Course, which includes a relaxed route down the headwaters of Kushiro River by canoe and a tea break on the river, is highly recommended for early morning and early evening.

Our guide was very helpful and knowledgeable and completely put us at ease. We learned a lot about the natural environment we were passing through. The canoeing was wonderful - very peaceful and...

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
