Here you can find about 100 stores selling such things as sweets, ready-made dishes, bread, box lunches, alcohol, and fresh food, etc. There are also many of the famous Hokkaido confectionery names here such as Rokkatei and LeTAO so it’s a popular place for tourists. You can pick up fresh Hokkaido seafood, fruit and vegetables which is why this place is familiarly known as the local Sapporo kitchen. There’s also a cafe called Kinotoya which is well known for its milk cookies.

Aji no Niko is a well-established restaurant founded in 1970 at the Jyogai Ichiba (outside of Sapporo Central Wholesale Market) in Sapporo City, Hokkaido. It became famous as the first restaurant to sell seafood rice bowls in the market. Many tourists, as well as people from the market, and local residents come here to eat. The bountiful seafood toppings brought in by the restaurant owner from the morning market is as fresh as it can get. You can enjoy all the delights of the north sea in your seafood bowl, such as sea urchin, salmon roe, and crab, as well sashimi dishes too.

Fishermen Cuisine North Ryoba is a restaurant occupying three stalls in the crab market adjacent to the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market in Sapporo City, Hokkaido, that specializes in “Yanshu” (“Fishermen”) cuisine. The house special is Kaisen Don (a bowl of rice topped with seafood), made with fresh fish and seafood delivered directly from the market and Hokkaido-grown rice; the restaurant offers more than 30 different varieties of Don, besides a comprehensive range of other fishermen’s cuisine delicacies evocative of the seas off Hokkaido, including rice-balls, sashimi, Red King Crab and broiled Okhotsk Atka Mackerel. Yanshu’s Japanese Green Sea Urchin, with its rich, melt-in-the-mouth, sweet flavor, is also very popular, whether grilled or eaten with rice as a Don dish.

The seafood is so fresh I’ve no complaints. Got to eat a slice of rock melon at 400yen. And tasted a grilled sweet corn. All good. On top of a whole king crab 1kg 6000yen.

This is select shop located in the underground shopping street, “Aurora Town” which is directly connected to Odori underground station. It sells foodstuffs produced in Hokkaido, and is managed by Marui Imai department store. Within the store, there is a full array of the best items that have been selected from all over Hokkaido such as processed seafood products, vegetables, famous confections, desserts and dairy products. There is also a corner area selling the bread from a popular bakery which can only be purchased locally. They sell approximately 1,200 kinds of food products to add “taste” to the dining tables of Sapporo from standard goods to unusual items.

This main shop of Miyakoshiya Coffee, a much-loved shop in Hokkaido, is located in the Maruyama area of Sapporo City. Its heavy stone-walled exterior is eye-catching, and the interior is filled with tables, chairs and furnishings, decorated so as to calm the mind. The store’s motto is “Coffee that any person will say is the best.” It roasts its own coffee beans, carefully valuing the five aspects of coffee “richness,” “fragrance,” “flavor,” “acid taste,” and “bitterness,” and the homemade cakes also go very well with the coffee. From the window on the second floor, customers can look out over Maruyama Park as they relax.

I stumbled across this gem on my way back to the Station after visiting the Hokkaido Jingu Shrine at Maruyama Park. A traditional terrace style house from the outside, upon entering you are welcomed...

A crab specialty restaurant located in Sapporo. In order to serve fresh, high quality horsehair crab, the restaurant stocks its goods from various locations depending on the season. Kanikichi aims to provide crab at reasonable prices so everyone can enjoy this delicious treat. Kanikichi serves its crab in a variety of styles, including sashimi, parboiled, boiled, and more. There are also hearty menu options like crab shabushabu and crab sukiyaki hotpots. The restaurant serves exceptionally reasonably priced options during lunch.

Service was painfully slow - 30 minutes for a sashimi plate and 25 minutes + a reminder before I got the beer I ordered. When it did come the sashimi was decidedly mediocre and unreasonably priced...
