  • LITTLE JUICE BAR
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Chuo-ku Minami 4-jo higashi 3-11-1
This is the main shop of the LITTLE JUICE BAR, which offers a new way to enjoy fruit. Their frozen dessert Ichigo Kezuri (R) is 100% made from strawberries. Ichigo Kezuri (R) was born in 2008, and is a new idea based on the familiar syrup-topped shaved ice. They shave down whole frozen strawberries, and top it with milk mousse for a filling sweet treat. The crunch of frozen strawberries is matched with rich milk mousse made with Hokkaido milk and condensed milk in perfect harmony. It's a perfect treat for outdoor summer fun, when proper vitamins are often hard to find.
  • Ramen Sapporo Bacchi-ken
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Chuo-ku
This shop offers ramen that's rich but doesn't weigh heavy. They offer tonkotsu pork bone based super-savory soy sauce ramen on the third floor of a building near Susukino Station. The usual way to enjoy it is with the hajikami topping, with grilled fish and more. The hajikami ginger, which is up to three centimeters thick, is the perfect accent to their thick ramen broth. It's also a great partner to their flavorfully steeped young bamboo sprouts. The medium-thick, straight noodles pick up the broth's iwanori seaweed and onions for a variable flavor that will have you finishing your bowl in no time!
  • Tenho
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Chuo-ku Minami 5-jo nishi 3
This ramen shop makes their broth in a special custom pot the size of an oil drum. It's made fresh every morning, without recycling the old, so this broth stands out for its total lack of old pork smell. Their most popular dish, with a diehard core of regular customers, is the Shoyu Ramen. Their specially made soy sauce base is mixed with char siu pork drippings for a full load of meaty goodness. It's finished with the lightest oil from the lard and pork bone broth for a smooth mouthfeel. The rich pork bone broth is perfectly matched with medium-thick crinkly noodles, for a bowl that even non-tonkotsu eaters will love.

This Susukino soup curry specialist is famous for serving their meals in clay pots. The spicy, piping hot curry arrives at your table sizzling in the heated pots. There are three different varieties of soup curry available here: the original soup, with rich vegetable and fruit flavors; the Japanese-style soup made with a secret recipe; and the Shrimp Tomato soup loaded with rich shrimp flavor. You can also choose the level of spice. Because it's in the heart of Susukino, it's open late at night, and they also offer delivery.

A cheesecake shop identifiable by its regal exterior. The shop has continued to make high quality cheesecakes whose superior flavor is revealed in their simplicity since it opened in 1993. The shop's most popular product is its rich and creamy Kase cheesecake. This vaunted gem has a smooth texture and the faintest citrus aroma. Made according to the same recipe as when the restaurant was founded, customers can buy by the slice or purchase a whole cake. The shop carries over 15 varieties of cakes, standard, including no-bake varieties which have even strong fruit juice and citrus notes, baked cheesecakes which go great with wine, and cheesecakes combined with whipped cream layers.

  • Arataki Tonkotsu Araton Main Shop
    Gourmet / Alcohol
Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Chuo-ku Kita 10-jo nishi 21-15-1 Sapporo Market Shokudo Osa Yanai
This ramen shop is near the southern parking lot of Sapporo's Central Wholesale Market. Like the name says, they offer broth made with pork and fish bones. The dipping broth opens up with the aroma of fish stock, which melds perfectly with the rich base of pork broth. The shop's master built his skills in a popular Tokyo ramen shop before bringing his experience here. The fish used changes with the season, so one of the real charms of this shop is seeing how the flavor subtly changes through the year. The shop closes when they run out of broth, so we recommend coming early to make sure you get a bowl!

    Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Chuo-ku Kita 11-jo nishi 21 Sapporo Market

The shop takes advantage of its connection to the marketplace to sell the freshest seafood at the most reasonable prices. The market is always bustling, but this shop maintains a calm atmosphere for a relaxing change, perfect for tour groups or families. They also have a large selection of manga to read at your leisure.
  • Sushi and Chinese Restaurant Fukurokuju
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Chuo-ku Kita 1 Nishi 3-3-24 Sapporo Chuo Building 3F
"This restaurant offers a novel pairing of sushi and Chinese food. The spacious ""Wa-modern"" style interior is a perfect space to enjoy fresh seafood and authentic Chinese dining. The Hotei style is to start off with fresh seafood sushi, and finish up with authentic Chinese cuisine that brings out the rich flavors of its ingredients. This shop really shines in how it can showcase the changing flavors of the same ingredients prepared in different ways. The sushi chef and Chinese cook stand behind sushi-shop style counter in different uniforms, for a unique viewing experience. The popular Hotei flagship dish, zangi style fried chicken, is available not only at the main shop and Akarenga branch, but here as well."

"This ramen shop is a certified ""Kita no Megumi Aishoku Restaurant,"" a government certification that identifies restaurants that focus on crafting cuisine from Hokkaido-produced ingredients. The shop is located in the basement floor of a building attached to Exit 23 of the subway Sapporo Station. They offer up house-made noodles in their carefully crafted ramen. The shop's most popular dish is the Genki no Deru Miso Ramen (energizing miso ramen). It's topped with scrambled eggs mixed with Hokkaido grown ground pork sauteed with gyoja ninniku, or Siberian onion, gathered from the mountains of Hokkaido. The garlic and nira chives are prepared so that you won't have garlic breath afterward! The rich flavor and nutritious ingredients make this bowl a real pick-me-up dish, just like the name says!"
  • Tsuruhashi Fugetsu Daimaru Sapporo Restaurant
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Chuo-ku Kita Gojonishi 4-7 Omaru Sapporo 8F
This okonomiyaki and yakisoba chain has locations all over Japan. This location offers up their crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside okonomiyaki in the eighth-floor food area of the Daimaru Sapporo Branch department store, connected to Sapporo Station. This okonomiyaki is mostly made of cabbage, with very little batter, so it's extra satisfying! Since the staff cooks it up right in front of you, it's perfect for guests of all ages.

They offer miso ramen made with care in a building across from the Hokkaido Television Broadcasting studio. Their popular Awase Miso Ramen mixes hearty white miso with clean red miso in a delicate harmony. The rich soup matches perfectly with medium-thick noodles and massive char siu pork slices, which cover fully 1/3 of the bowl's surface. Under that char siu the noodles are topped with sauteed carrots, chives, and beansprouts. People come from all over for a taste of just how great mixed miso can be.
  • Buta King (Sapporo Kanjo Shop)
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Higashi-ku Fushiko 1-5-6-13
This Jiro-inspired ramen shop is on Kanjo-dori Street. Look for the large flag inscribed with the shop's rather eye-catching name. The shop's pride is their take on Sapporo's orthodox miso broth. The chewy noodles are made with high water levels in the dough, and the end result is a surprisingly light bowl of ramen. Just like the main style, you can customize your topping with extra vegetables, garlic, and pork back fat. Their big-serving size Obuta Ramen is topped with thick sliced char siu pork in a towering peaked stack for a dynamic visual treat. It can take time to actually get down to the noodles, so make sure to leave space in your schedule, and your stomach, before accepting this challenge!

This sweets shop is located about a threeminute walk from Kita 12-jo subway station. The interior overflows with classic elegance, and the showcase is lined with an array of treats. Their most popular item is the rich chocolate cake, made with mildly bitter chocolate, it's a hit not only with chocoholics, but goes down easy for those who usually don't go for the dark delight, as well. Their show window highlights treats like shortcake, mont blanc, gateau fraise and fruit tarts, all of which are available to eat in or to go.

  • Ramen Sandaime Tsukimiken (Sapporo Station North Entrance Shop)
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Kita-ku Kita 6 Nishi 7-5-3
"This ramen shop is along the tracks about a five-minute walk from Sapporo Station. This shop preserves the iconic flavor of authentic Sapporo ramen like it was when it was founded in 1958. The shop's pride and joy is the Miso Ramen, with a recipe that took three generations to perfect. They blend red and white miso in a unique mixture, and mix in thirty different seasonings, including fruit like apple and orange. This work of years has resulted in a level of richness and flavor that is simply irresistible. This is why so many hotel concierges guide customers here, saying ""if you want to try real Sapporo ramen, then head to Tsukimiken."""
  • FLAGSTAFF CAFE

The owner and master of this shop does everything, from roasting coffee beans to making cake, brewing tea and serving it, too! The cafe faces the main gate of Hokkaido University, and is a comfortable spot to sit and relax. The unpretentious atmosphere offers a quiet place to savor your coffee and cake. The refined atmosphere is populated with not only the expected student clientele, but older neighborhood residents out on walks as well. The owner is quite chatty and happy to talk about topics like travel, high school baseball, bicycles, or gardening.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
