    Hokkaido Akanguntsuruimura Shimosetsuri
Tsurumidai is a bird-feeding station that every year, between November and March, is visited by large numbers of Japanese Red-crowned Cranes. The Cranes are fed twice a day, in the morning and around 2:30 p.m. Originally, the Cranes were fed by the teachers and students of the local elementary school. When the school closed down, Ms. Tome Watanabe, who lived nearby, decided that she would keep feeding the Cranes, and has continued to do so since then, which is another reason for Tsurumidai’s fame. Sometimes, nearly 200 Cranes can be seen.

Visited on a sunny but very cold day in late March and the snow has melted. There were perhaps 5-6 cranes. Feeding has stoppped here but I saw a field of cranes feeding themselves on fresh crops...

A roadside station located in Shikabe Town with a geyser on its grounds. Discovered in 1924, the geyser blows every 12 minutes or so; the roadside station also has a footbath filled with waters from the hot spring that fuels the geyser. In the local specialty products shop, you can buy marine products like Shikabe cod roe, fresh seafood, and local vegetables. There's an adjoining facility offering hot spring-steamed and barbecued food. Women from the Shikabe Fishery Cooperative serve seafood dishes in the Hama no Kasan Shokudo restaurant and also hold short classes on how to make local meals.

We had the local cuisine experience at Hamano Kaasan, to learn cooking with fishermans wives and this place was just next to it. We had a good 10-15 minute foot bath ( I believe the admission fee...

Sapporo, Hokkaido, Higashi-ku, Moerenuma Park 1-1
Moerenuma Park is a comprehensive park in northeast Sapporo for which globally renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi created the basic design. Based on the concept of “the whole being a single sculpture,” it was recommended to build on a site where 2.7 million tons of waste had been put in landfill, and the park opened in 2005. Hills with geometric forms, fountains, and play equipment have been arranged in a vast site equivalent to 40 Tokyo Domes, allowing a landscape that fuses art and nature to be enjoyed. Another attraction is that seasonal pastimes can be enjoyed with cherry blossoms in the spring, water activities in the summer, autumn leaves in the fall, and cross country skiing in the winter.

Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples is located in Suehiro Town, Hakodate and introduces the lives and culture of northern peoples. Collections with high academic value on a global level are on display. They include materials formerly held by Hakodate City Museum collected by philanthropists and the Hokkaido Development Commission between 1879 and 1886 in addition to Ainu folk materials collected by Dr. Osamu Baba, a world authority on research into northern peoples.

This was my favorite museum in Hakodate. Everything was in English as well as Japanese. Learned a lot about the native people and early settlers. Only 300 yen. One hour is probably enough time.

The exterior of the building is modeled on the Palazzo Grassi in Venice while the second, third and fifth floor exhibition rooms, styled on the 18th century palace rooms, house an elegant museum. The museum hosts many special exhibitions in addition to the Venetian displays of interior design throughout the seasons and permanent displays of Murano Glass. You can also get dressed up in aristocratic or carnival-style clothing and have your photograph taken for posterity! The museum is a 10-minute walk from JR Minami-Otaru Station and a ten minute drive from Otaru interchange.

This shop sells lots of different coloured glass items produced locally. They are beautiful and intricate. Reminded me of Murano glass.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
