The Hokkaido Ice Pavilion in Kamikawa, Hokkaido, at the foot of Mt. Daisetsuzan, is the world’s first and best place to experience the extreme cold. The temperature inside the ice hall is kept at -20°C which creates a completely 360° world of ice. You can experience the extreme cold of -41°C and the ‘diamond dust’ effect (where the moisture in the air is frozen) and you can also have your photo taken with the sea angel, Clione. The giant icicles, which have been 25 years in the making, are also a must-see.

Hokkaido Obihiroshi Higashisanjouminami 2-1

Founded in 1910, this shrine in Obihiro City, Hokkaido is dedicated to three gods of land reclamation. All of them are associated with national land, and because the shrine faces National Route 38, they are also honored for disaster prevention and traffic safety. A traditional dondo-yaki event is held on January 15th every year where participants burn New Year's pine decorations and sacred shrine ropes; these days, they also immolate votive plaques, talismans, and household altars. In February the shrine holds an event marking Setsubun, the holiday at the end of winter. They also conduct an exorcism of bad luck called yakubarai.

Lake Shikotsu is a large caldera lake of almost 40 kilometers in circumference in Chitose City, Hokkaido. It is Japan’s northernmost ice-free lake with high water transparency and a maximum water depth of 363 meters. The three Shikotsu peaks of Mt. Eniwa, Mt. Fuppushi and Mt. Akankohan Eco-Museum Center introduces you to the lush nature in the Akan National Park Akan area. The Akan Marimo (round green algae) has been designated as a Special Natural Monument. The resting room has a big fireplace and is good for a rest after walking around the lake. You can hire the snowshoes and cross country skis. You can enjoy a walk on the Bokke nature trail which is behind the museum.

Farm Tomita is a tourist farm in Furano, Hokkaido, which is called “lavender heaven.” Beautiful lavender fills an entire field. The flowering period is from late June for the early blooms until early August for the late blooms. The best time to see Lavender East, the biggest lavender field in Japan, is from early until mid-July. There is also a shop on the site that handles pot pourri and perfume made from lavender as well as a cafe. Even in the off-season, you can enjoy a variety of flower fields.

At Daisetsu Mori-no Garden you can enjoy flowers from season to season in the five themed gardens of Mori-no hanazono, and the five areas of Mori-no geihinkan. There are approximately 700 kinds of flowers planted here, and in the Taisetsu-no niwa garden you can enjoy alpine plants seen growing on Mt. Daisetsu and species of plant life native to Hokkaido. The Shikino Sumiko area is divided into zones according to the plant’s flowering period so you can enjoy flowers of every season. The area called Hanano Izumi, or Fountain of Flowers, symbolizes a spring using plants which grow across the ground like water pouring forth from the earth. Shitashimino Niwa, or The Familiar Garden, as the name suggests, is a garden in which you feel as if you can get close to and enjoy the scent of the flowers. From the windows of the Underwater Observation Boat New Shakotan-go you can see the beautifully transparent waters known as the Shakotan Blue. It takes about 40 minutes to go around the scenic spots and witness the spectacular scenery of the sea around Shakotan. Boat departures take place every day from late April through to late October (canceled if heavy rain, inquire beforehand) and depart at regular intervals of about one hour. From Sapporo to Shakotan Bikuni takes about 2.5 hours by highway bus. From Yoichi Station takes about 48 minutes by regular bus.

Great tour with beautiful views, some underwater action and the feeding of a flock of seagulls. Money well spent. The tour guide only speaks Japanese but that doesnt take away from the experience...
