    Hokkaido Kushiroshi Nishikichou 3-5-3
A barbecue-style restaurant run directly by a fishery in Kushiro City, Hokkaido. Here you can cook and eat freshly caught fish, just plucked out of Kushiro Port moments before, on the barbecues before you. The menu is full of culinary delights from the north, including scallops in their shells, oysters from Akkeshi, and Atka mackerel. Courses and set menus, as well as individual items, are all popular. The inside of the restaurant has a retro feel about it where the old brick warehouse was renovated. The place is always packed with friends, couples and families.

Hachikyo is a local cuisine restaurant which uses carefully selected ingredients from all parts of Hokkaido and located only one minute walk from Susukino Station. The restaurant’s specialty is Tsukko Meshi, which is a bowl of rice covered with large amounts of salmon roe. As the staff pour the salmon roe over the rice they shout out “Oisah!”. The restaurant prides itself on being the only restaurant in the world which serves so much salmon roe. But it’s not just about the large amounts; they use only the best, most carefully selected salmon roe. The restaurant is decked out with ring buoys, fishing lamps, and fishing boat flags which give the characteristic feel of a banya, or simple lodging house used by fishermen.

Service and food is above average. However, a tad expensive, which is y I gave it a 4 stars instead.

Located in Shakotan Town, Shakotan County, Hokkaido, Restaurant Misaki is open from late April to fall each year. The restaurant owner is a sea urchin fisherman and ensures that no additives are used in any of their signature sea urchin dishes. Especially popular is their raw red horse-dung sea urchin on rice which is served between June and August each year and limited to only 15 dishes per day! It’s a well-known restaurant regularly covered by the press, and often has long queues of eager customers waiting outside in the morning.

The staff was friendly and assisted us with ordering from the ticketing machine, the food came pretty fast. As a number of us don’t really take raw food, there were not many dishes to choose from.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
