One of the defining features of Araiso cuisine, which uses food from the land and sea of the area around Shiretoko-utoro which is a world natural heritage site, is that it is committed to local produce and local consumption. Here you can enjoy a variety of dishes such as sashimi, seafood on rice, venison cooked in leaf, Shiretoko seafood noodles, and other delicacies. Hokkaido Wakkanaishi Chuou 2-8-22
A Wakkanai regional restaurant just a five-minute walk from Wakkanai Station. Try Takoshabu, one of Wakkanai's most famous dishes made from thinly sliced fresh Japanese giant octopus that is quickly dipped in dashi stock. Enjoy it with their special miso sauce hot pot with lettuce and mushrooms. Try other items from their popular menu such as fried sailfin poacher, which can only be caught in small amounts in neighboring Otaru, or Toban-yaki (ceramic hot pot) which bakes pork, seafood and vegetables with butter.

Its just a Japanese dining room type restaurant. The menu is mostly uninteresting, and the food is mediocre. The only dish I can even remember eating here was something floating in a bowl of melted...

    Hokkaido Kushiroshi Akanchouakankonsen 4-4-1
Nabekyuu is a restaurant specializing in local cuisine that is located near Lake Akan, surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. As might be expected, the Sockeye Salmon and Japanese Pond Smelt caught locally in Lake Akan are particularly popular. In winter, the Japanese Pond Smelt is in season and can be eaten as Tempura, fried in a light coating of batter; it has a wonderful crisp texture and a delicious mild flavor. The Sockeye Salmon is in season in early summer, when it can be enjoyed as Sashimi or grilled with salt; both are equally delicious. The restaurant’s Sockeye Salmon Don (a bowl of fish and rice) and Japanese Pond Smelt Don dishes are also available as half-sized portions, so diners can try both fish together.

The handmade soba is very tasty and texture is definitely very from those ready made one. Worth a try if you are around the area.

The favorite dishes here are the Fatty Beef Gyutoro Donburi, in which a subtle sweetness and flavor of beef is enhanced with fat flakes to melt in your mouth. Also the Tokachi Shimizu Beef and Egg Steak Donburi bowl is a favorite that has a more substantial steak matched with egg flavor. Hokkaido Abutaguntouyakochou Touyakonsen 40-16
This eatery with about 60 years of history is located in Toyako Onsen. The store is known for its home cooking that uses vegetables picked in the morning, local seasonal seafood and locally raised meat. The small interior has a relaxing atmosphere that feels like you're at home. The scallop and egg rice bowl is highly recommended. It has young shellfish fry taken from Funka (volcano) Bay cooked with egg over rice, and comes with shellfish miso soup and pickles. The Tonkatsu Set using fresh Date golden pork and pork cutlet rice bowl are also popular. The fresh sashimi assortment is also a perfect match as a snack when drinking.

TIP:It seems only 4 families can fit at once + bar space. This is house transformed into a family business. Because it is a traditional home, you must remove your shoes. The staff don’t speak much...

"A local cuisine restaurant located in 1-Chome, Hanazono, Otaru City. The establishment primarily serves dishes made with fresh seafood stocked that very morning. Here customers can enjoy local flavors like the signature ""Troika-nabe,"" a fish and vegetable hot pot; rui-be (frozen salmon sashimi), a local favorite; and dishes made with ray, a fish known as ""kasube"" in the local dialect and the restaurant's namesake."

    4,000円の刺身付のコース料理を頂きましが、どれもこれも郷土色が強く滅多にみられないものを提供して頂きました。全て美味しく頂け大満足です。内装も素敵でお勧めの店として今後もリピートするつもりです。

    Hokkaido Kameda-gun Nanaecho Onumacho 145
This venerable home-cooking restaurant has offered dishes built around local food nourished by the area's natural abundance since its founding in 1968. Located about a two-minute walk from Onumakoen Station, it offers old fashioned Japanese dishes like unagi kabayaki grilled eel, junsai (water shield) soba, ceramic-plate grilled Onuma beef, and salt-grilled sweetfish. The shop's most popular dish is Onuma beef Gyumeshi, a rice bowl loaded with Onuma beef raised at the foot of Mt. Komagatake flavored with a special sauce. It is cooked with onions, burdock root, and konjac noodles for another level of flavor. Their pond smelt simmered in sweetened soy sauce served over Hokkaido's own Nanatsuboshi rice is another favorite. On days when the shop is open, you can also order from the Onuma Kokusai Exchange Plaza, attached to the station.

    川魚、大沼牛と看板などに書いてありますが、大沼牛の方がメイン的な感じでした。せっかくなので、大沼牛の他に、ワカサギの筏焼なども注文。どれも普通。可もなく不可もなく。

  • Kushiro Komagataya
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Hokkaido Kushiro-shi Sakaemachi 6-2
Located a one-hour drive from Kushiro Airport, this restaurant serves local cuisine and has a subdued, traditional Japanese exterior. The restaurant has a high class atmosphere and serves the kind of refined Japanese cuisine you'll particularly want to enjoy on a clear, sunny day. The restaurant's signature dish is its whole king crab served in its own vivid, scarlet shell. Compared with other types of crab, the meat of a hearty boiled blue king crab has a sweet and rich flavor. Many customers choose to enjoy it garnished with sanbaizu (equal parts vinegar, soy sauce, and mirin), the juice of a sudachi citrus fruit, and salt. Replete with private dining areas and a large room capable of hosting groups, the establishment can be used for banquets, get-togethers, and all manner of engagements.

This restaurant is located inside Kakuichi Baba shop, a fresh seafood broker and wholesaler for the Akkeshi region. The homey interior is the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood meal. Rather than tricky charcoal grilling, this shop stands out for its use of griddle steaming. They offer highly fresh and juicy oysters, scallops, clams, and whelks as well. Their Crab Fried Rice and Seafood Ramen, which were once back-kitchen dishes for staff-only but are now on the regular menu, are big hits.

    昼食でカキフライ定食や蒸し牡蠣をいただきました。カキフライの牡蠣ひとつひとつが大きくてジューシーでとてもおいしかったです。でもお値段は1300円とちょっとだけ高い気がしました。

    Hokkaido Chitose-shi Shikotsukonsen
"This restaurant is located in the shopping street alongside Lake Shikotsu, the northernmost non-freezing lake in Japan. It is famous for its reputation as a place where customers can enjoy ""chip"" dishes such as set meals, sushi, rice bowls and soba in a mysteriously nostalgic atmosphere. ""Chip"" is a word in the Ainu language, which means ""red salmon"". The sushi set is very popular, as it allows customers to enjoy several types of food, including red salmon, with its smooth flavor, and fries, as well as nigiri sushi. The owner of the restaurant is an experienced chef who has studied in Sapporo and Osaka. The small bones of the red salmon are carefully removed one by one to make it easier for customers to eat. And this commitment to such fine details draws many customers from great distances, who come to enjoy the fine dishes."

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
