Akiu Craft Park consists of nine craft “households” that live in the village while continuously applying themselves to their craft and producing authentic wares. Those with reservations can experience koma (top for spinning play) decoration, kokeshi wooden doll decoration, chopstick lacquering, handkerchief indigo dyeing, and jigsaw woodworking. There are also seasonal events that visitors can enjoy while walking through the site. It’s about 15 minutes by car from the Sendai Minami Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.

This is a lovely place to do crafts or to purchase crafts. The one downside is that it is hard to get here by public transit. Worth a stop if you are coming to the area!

Visitors to this facility can learn about Yajirokokeshi, a doll which features a large head drawn like wearing a beret, and a vividly colored, striped torso. The museum has an exhibition about the history of kokeshi dolls with old, reminiscent photographs on the first floor, and a painting experience class and exhibits that are for sale on the second floor. Yajiroarea, which is said to be one of the birthplaces of kokeshi dolls, is a small village of Kijishi (woodturner) masters located in a space between valleys. From fall to winter, trees on the mountain were felled to make kokeshi dolls, which, as souvenirs sold to visitors to the hot springs, became well-known alongside the history of the area's hot springs. In addition to workshop tours and painting experience classes, kokeshi dolls that are no longer needed, or can no longer be appreciated, are memorialized here.

This dyer shop is said to be the birthplace of Yui Masayuki, a military scholar from the early Edo period. Inside this shop which has persisted since the early Edo period, there is a pot, household Shinto shrine, dyeing tools, and an emergency basket, just as in earlier days. Masayuki gained fame by teaching the Kusunoki school of military science. During the Keian Uprising (Yui Masayuki Revolt) in 1651, the plan to topple the Tokugawa Shogunate was discovered, and Masayuki took his own life.
