    Upon the opening of a passageway for mountain buses to this central location on the island in 1959 these highlands were named the Utsukushi-no-hara Kogen. Until that time it had been called Shihozashi, meaning pointing four-directions as there is no visual obstruction in any direction. It is the only promontory on Shodo Island. From here one can see, below, the famous sites Kankakei Gorge, Utsumi Bay nearby, and Himeji or Awaji Island in the distance as well as a sweeping view of the Shikoku mountain range. From the observation deck, only 30 steps up from the ground, visitors have an magnificent panoramic view surrounded by various blooming trees that vary with each season. A wonderfully scenic spot during the daytime but it is also a popular site for enjoying the nightscape of the surrounding towns and islands. This observation deck, at only 777 meters in elevation is a representative spot on Shodo Island known where many enjoy the sunrise on New Year’s day.

    A highland located between the outer northern crater rim of Mt. Aso and the Kuju Mountain Range. Known for the scenic Yamanami Highway, the area also bustles with visitors come to pick edible wild plants like bracken, and, in fall, to view the gorgeous autumn foliage. There are also rest houses, lodges, campgrounds, and hot spring bathhouses in the area.

    You can see the Southern Alps, Northern Alps, and Chuo Alps from these mountains, which have an altitude of 1,918 meters; in fact, they’re called the “Alps Observation site.” There are hiking and trekking courses in the area as well as an auto camp site, offering plenty of outdoor activities. The newly blooming plants, changing of the leaves, and sunset are all gorgeous, making this a popular driving destination.

    This is a nearly 270-hectare natural recreation forest located at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters and situated at the upper stream of the Anbogawa River’s tributary, the Arakawa River. Four courses have been created that allow walkers to enjoy large trees representative of the Yakusugi forest zone including sugi (a type of Japanese cryptomeria or cedar), tsuga (southern Japanese hemlock), and momi (fir), and visitors can enjoy the nature according to their physical ability. Visitors on the 50-minute or 80-minute courses can see Buddha sugi that are estimated to be 1,800 years old, and on the 150-minute course Tenchu sugi that are vying to be Yakushima’s tallest and second tallest trees.

    This highland in Shikokuchuo City centers around Mt. Suihamine and sits almost 890 meters above sea level. Enjoy a fantastic 360-degree panoramic view of various islands in the Seto Inland Sea and the Shikoku mountain range. Come see the amazing scenery of golden rapeseed flowers covering the land in spring or cosmos flowers from summer to early fall. This is also a popular cherry blossom viewing location as from mid-April to May the Yoshino cherry, hill cherry, and double-flowered cherry are all in full bloom. There is also a children's area with a playground, toilets, and a parking lot. Many tourists visit during the spring when the flowers bloom like a carpet.

    A plateau in Midagahara, Ashikuji, Tateyama, Nakaniikawa. Stretching two kilometers north to south and four kilometers east to west, it is Japan's largest plateau over 2000-meters above sea level. It offers beautiful scenery especially as the colors start to change during autumn.

    A wetland created where spring water flows from the Yumihari Mountains. It has rare geological features from an academic viewpoint, whose origin is unique to the Tokai region. It is home to approximately 250 plant species and 200 insect species, including wetland plants, alpine plants, and insectivorous plants. It was designated as a national natural monument on October 13, 2021.

    A highland sprawling on the north side of Mt. Hachibuse in Osasa, Muraoka Ward, Kami Town, Mikata County. The location of the Hachikita Ski Resort as well as numerous ryokan inns, hotels, lodges, and hot spring bathhouses. Events held in the area include ski tournaments such as the Hachikita Alpine Skiing Competition, and Cronoscalate in Hachikita, a hill climbing tournament which makes use of specially closed off public roads.

    This highland area is in Hidaka-cho, Toyooka City. One of the Geo Sites that make up the San'in Kaigan Geopark, it has a rich natural environment of valleys and mountains that includes Mt. Kannabe. Visitors enjoy a variety of activities like mountain climbing, camping, paragliding, fishing, and winter sports. The resort area also has accommodation and a hot spring facility.

    A highland sprawling partway up the southern slope of Mt. Hachibuse in Yabu City. There are mountain climbing and hiking courses here as well as a campground and paragliding school, plus a ski resort in winter, and visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities in the area. There are also numerous hotels, ryokan inns, and lodges to be found in this resort destination.

    Nikko Kirifuri Highland, Kisuge-daira Park is located around 30 minutes' drive from the Nikko Interchange of the Nikko Utsunomiya Road, via the Kirifuri-ohashi Bridge and Kirifuri Highland Road. The Park is a highland area at an elevation of around 1,200 meters on the slopes of Mt. Akanagi. It is a treasure-house of alpine plants; it is particularly famous for Brown Dwarf Day Lily flowers, around 260,000 of which can be seen in bloom from late June through into mid-July. Kisuge-daira, the area where the flowers grow, also has hiking trails for visitors to use. Starting in late October, there is beautiful autumn foliage, and in winter visitors can enjoy skiing. There is also the Nikko Kirifuri Kogen Chirorin Village leisure facility, which is ideal for both couples and families.

    "Urabandai Highland is a highland area to the north of Mt. Bandai, located around 25 minutes' drive from Inawashiro Bandai Kogen Interchange on the Ban-Etsu Expressway. Viewed from the south, Mt. Bandai has a very neat, mountain-like appearance, but the north side has a rough, irregular shape due to sectoral collapse, hence the name ""Urabandai"" (meaning ""Back of Mt. Bandai""). Urabandai is famous for the Goshikinuma lakes and ponds; there are many lakes and ponds, with water that takes a wide range of different colors, including emerald green and cobalt blue. Urabandai is a great place to visit in spring (for the new greenery) and autumn (for the autumn foliage), but it is also well worth seeing in winter, when visitors can enjoy snowshoe-trekking. Special guided tours, available only in winter, take visitors to see Goshikinuma ponds when they are at their most magical and mysterious."

    Also known as ''Heaven's Road'', this highland runs alongside Prefectural Route 383. You can walk here from Mezurudaira, located in the center of the Shikoku Karst. The peak, sometimes called Godan Castle, sits almost 1,456 meters above sea level. On clear days you can see Mt. Ishizuchi, Tosa Bay, and the Shikoku mountain range. The highland is well deserving its title as the foremost viewing spot of the Shikoku karst with the ''Karrenfeld'' exposed limestone rocks and a basin-like ''doline'' sinkhole. The road has been chosen as one of the top 100 roads of Japan with its beautiful scenery that makes you feel like you're amongst the beautiful blue sky and pure white clouds.

    A highland area sprawling in Kuju Kuju-machi, Taketa City. The highland is a part of Aso Kuju National Park. The field burnings conducted here in March are a traditional practice which stretches back several hundred years; the act preserves the beautiful grass covered plain, and the highland is used for grazing. The highland is dotted with cottages, other lodging facilities, campgrounds, hot spring bathhouses, tourist farms, and observatories.

    This expansive plateau is located along the Echo Line in Zaosan, Nagano, Kaminoyama City at an altitude ranging from 1,000 to 1,200 meters. It features a pension village, a camp ground, Azalea Park, and other facilities. Visitors can experience the seasonal nature offered by the highlands, such as the alpine plants and fresh greenery. There is also a ski area and a cross-country skiing course that are used for ski competitions, training camps, and other events.
  • Matsubarako Highland

    This plateau is located in Toyosato, Koumi Town, Minamisaku County near Lake Inako, Lake Choko, and Lake Otsuki, which are collectively referred to as Lake Matsubara. It features a variety of facilities including hot springs and camp grounds as well as sporting facilities such as a skating center and tennis courts. Visitors can also enjoy activities such as boating and strolling along the lakeshore. Anglers can fish for Japanese crucian carp on the lake and even go ice fishing for Japanese pond smelt in the winter.
  • Happogahara Omamadai

    This plateau, which is a part of Nikko National Park, is located about a 15-minute drive from Yaita Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. It is famous for its Japanese azalea. Starting in mid-June the entire area is dyed vermilion by about 200,000 of these flowers. From the observation deck, visitors can see Nikko City, the Nasu Mountain Range, and as far as the Kanto Plain. A promenade has been built in the area, making it popular with trekkers and hikers. Visitors can enjoy observing the starry night sky in the summer and viewing the fall foliage in the autumn. During the azalea season shuttle buses that operates between the plateau and JR Yaita Station are available.

    This highland is in Nishibora, Asahi-cho, Takayama City. Spreading out at 1,400 meters above sea level, it's filled with natural wonders like clumps of lily of the valley and other alpine plants, wild birds, and more. The air is cool even in summer, and offers a view over the Northern Japan Alps. In addition to a villa area equipped with hot-spring, there is a golf course as well.

    A highland area located in Tano, Kokonoe Town, Kusu County, Oita Prefecture. Situated inside Aso Kuju National Park, the area serves as a trailhead for climbing the Kuju Mountain Range and is also a lush natural destination in its own right, encompassing such naturally beautiful places as the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands-registered Tadewara Wetlands. Other area highlights include the Yamanami Highway, a scenic driving route from which you can take in the highland's beauty; a cross country running course; trekking course; tourism farm; and several hot spring bathhouses.
