In 1597, six Franciscan missionaries and 20 Japanese Christians were executed on this hill as a result of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s prohibition of Christianity. It is reported that they requested to be martyred here because the site resembled the hill of Golgotha upon which Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross, and many other missionaries and followers were executed on this spot thereafter. A bronze monument featuring full-body statues of the 26 martyrs was erected in 1962. The Roman Catholic Church designated this spot as an official Vatican pilgrimage spot in 1950.

We made it here shortly before the museum closed, so we didnt see much of that part. However, even if you dont visit the museum, the monument itself is worth a visit. Its conveniently close to the...

This historic site is in Ono, Ikuno-cho, Asago City. Silver was discovered at the location in 807, and it played an important role in funding the shogunate during the Edo period (1603-1868). The Ikuno Silver Mine closed in 1973 and was re-purposed as a tourist facility. Today you can learn about the history of mining at the Mine Reference Library and the Cultural Museum of Ikuno Mine, and there are about 1,000 meters of mine tunnels you can tour, as well as other courses outside the tunnels.

Located a three minute walk from Motomachi-Chukagai Station. A cemetery that was built for foreign-born residents located close to Harbor View Park overlooking the port. The cemetery got its start when Commodore Matthew C. Perry made his momentous voyage to Japan in 1854 and a man named Robert Williams died in an accident on the USS Mississippi and was buried here. Several relatively famous personages are also buried here, such as Edmund Morel, the father of railways in Japan, and Mary Kidder, founder of the Ferris Jogakuin collection of schools. The Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery Museum is situated next to the entrance to the cemetery itself and presents a registry of individuals buried there and the history of Yokohama. The museum’s stained glass windows alone make it worth a visit.

This cemetery was established in 1854 after an American sailor died during a visit by Commodore Perry and part of the grounds of Zotokuin Temple were set aside for the purpose. If you arrive during...

    Tokyo Toshima-ku Minamikebukuro 4-25-1
The Zoshigaya Cemetery opened in 1874 as one of Tokyo’s municipal cemeteries. Occupying extensive grounds in Minami-Ikebukuro, closed to the bustling commercial district of Ikebukuro, the Cemetery is a quiet place where the only sound is the chirping of the birds. Many leading cultural figures are buried here, including Natsume Soseki, Nagai Kafu, Koizumi Yakumo, Takehisa Yumeji, and Nakahama Manjiro (John Manjiro). There are several flights of stone steps within the Cemetery leading up to elevated platforms; from these platforms, the views out over the streets of Zoshigaya are very atmospheric. Visitors to Zoshigaya Cemetery in autumn can see the beautiful red leaves of the Gingko trees.

After visiting Yanaka Cemeteries where cherry blossoms were in full bloom, we came to Zoshigaya Cemeteries surrounded by greeneries. It’s another cemeteries administered by the city of Tokyo. As...

Near the end of World War II, this underground vault was secretly built as the final base for the decisive battle on the mainland. It was dug under three locations: Mt. Maizuru, Mt. Minakami, and Mt. Zozan, like a square on a checkerboard. Extensions brought the total length to about 10 kilometers. From the start of the Heisei period, a sightseeing course in the zone managed by Nagano City about 500 meters large was created to display the war site.

"Even though a mere 380 meters from the blast center, this was a robust building, so it did not receive structural damage. It resumed business operations two days after the blast and was used until 1992. It's one of the buildings in the blast that remains today. Designated as an Important Cultural Property by Hiroshima City, it is open to the public. In May of 2019, a permanent display of Hiroshima City materials, the ""Modern Hiroshima History and Migration to foreign countries,"" opened in first floor basement."

Bumped into this walking through the city streets, dont know if it had access, I didnt see any. it looks old enough to have been one of the surviving buildings, but dont think so.

This trading post built in Hirado flourished as port of trade with the Netherlands for 33 years from 1609 to 1641 until the move to Nagasaki’s Dejima Island. The stone warehouse built in 1639 to store trade cargo is Japan’s first western-style building, and the exterior resembles the style of buildings in the Netherlands. To the Japanese this exterior was a strange sight and since the Western calendar was inscribed on the gables the Edo shogunate had it destroyed. The Hirado Dutch Trading Post that opened in 2011 is a faithful reconstruction of this building. Visitors can also peruse materials that concern trade in those days.

Whilst this building which was rebuilt over the old 1600s foundations of the Dutch Trading Post has limited space it was very worthwhile visiting to get an idea of how the Dutch lived and traded...

"This keyhole-shaped kofun tomb, built in the latter half of the fourth century, is the largest in Hyogo Prefecture. Also known as ""Sentsubo Kofun"" (Tomb of 1,000 Pots), the kofun is located a 10-minute walk from JR and Sanyo Electric Railway Tarumi Station. Mentioned in the ""Nihon Shoki,"" Japan's oldest historical anthology, the tomb is situated on land overlooking the Akashi Strait, a maritime traffic route, and it is thought that it is the grave site of some influential person who was deeply connected to sea traffic. The tomb was restored to look as it did when first built via a restoration project which started in 1965 and took 10 years to complete, and visitors can see for themselves the advanced ancient civil engineering which went into its construction."

Teppei Souma amassed his wealth in selling rice and grains, contributing to the development of Hakodate by investing his personal money in ""Old City Hall of Hakodate Ward."" The Souma house has a structure decked out in luxury, and featuring a merging of Japanese and Western styles, so it is well worth a look. Volunteer guides are always available, and there are many audio guides (Japanese/English). In the adjacent cafe, they provide freshly brewed coffee, and healthy aronia fruit juice. "A historical building in Higashitakinomachi, Iizaka-machi, Fukushima City. It's a restoration of the former Horikiri family residence, a village headman who made substantial contributions to the local economy. The grounds include valuable examples of old architecture including the Jukkenkura, a warehouse built in 1775 and the oldest such in the prefecture, as well as a newly constructed building that houses an exhibition room, tourist information, and event space. There's also a foot and hand bath on site and you can enjoy looking over the garden while warming yourself in the free flowing natural hot spring constantly replenished ""kakenagashi"" style."

Takasugi Shinsaku created the first auxiliary irregular militia in Japan known as Kiheitai which, with its novel idea and dynamism, led to the triumphant victory over the shogunate. The birthplace of Takasugi Shinsaku, the lucky mercenary of the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate, is located in Minamifuruhagi Town, Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Currently, the southern part of the former residence is open to the public. In addition to the well said to be used to give the newborn Shinsaku his first bath and a memorial stone with Shinsaku’s haiku engraved on it, there are a number of artifacts connected with Takasugi Shinsaku on display in the old house. * Because the house is privately owned only viewing from outside is permitted.
