A 10-minute walk from the Trappistine Convent bus stop. This Trappist monastery is situated on a hill sandwiched between Mt. Hakodate and the city. The monastery was the first one erected for women in Japan when it was built in 1898. The site was originally used by an orphanage before it was destroyed in a storm. The monastery rebuilt on the site was also later lost in a fire. The current monastery was rebuilt in 1927 and is notable for its brick walls and semicircular windows. The monastery is adjoined by a museum, shop, and garden; the shop's French Madeleines cakes are popular souvenirs.

A catholic convent with beautiful grounds to stroll upon. Located on a hill in the eastern part of Hakodate. Bought some famous Trappist cookies from the souvenir shop. Worth a short visit.

This Cathedral of the Catholic Church is located to the north of Nagasaki City. Its story began in the Edo period, with the ban on Christianity and the persecution of believers who lived in Urakami. The cathedral was built during the Meiji and Taisho periods. It was, however, later destroyed by the atomic bomb, leaving only a single wall standing, and the present building is a reconstruction of the original cathedral, built in 1959. It is located 5 minutes' walk from the Heiwa Koen (Peace Park) tram stop.

This was my first time to Nagasaki. This cathedral in positioned on a hill, so you can get a bit of a view of the surrounding area. Not many places like this in Asia.

Motomachi Roman Catholic Church is distinguished by its Gothic-style architecture and large bell-tower. The Church that visitors see today was rebuilt in 1924 after a fire. Having originally been built shortly after the restrictions on Christian proselytizing in Japan were relaxed, Motomachi Roman Catholic Church’s long history makes it one of the oldest congregations in Japan. To reach the Church, take the Hakodate Streetcar service and get off at the Jujigai Stop in Motomachi, near Mt. Hakodate; the Church is around 10 minutes’ walk from the Jujigai Stop.

Walk up the Daisan Zaka slope and you will see this Motomachi Catholic Church which was started by a French missionary with a temporary church hall in 1867. You will see a rooster at the top of the...

Inside, there are beautiful white marble statues depicting the Pieta, Don Bosco, and Our Lady of Lourdes. When visiting for the first time, mention this fact at the entrance to receive an explanation of the church's rules and proper etiquette.

Tsuwano Catholic Church, with its eye-catching Western Gothic style exterior, was built by a German priest in 1931. The inside of the church is a mix of both Western and Japanese influences with tatami flooring and impressive stained glass windows. Many Japanese Christians were persecuted and tortured for their religious beliefs at the Otome Pass in Tsuwano by the government during the Edo and Meiji periods from 1868 to 1872. Next to the Tsuwano Catholic Church is the Otome Pass Exhibition Room with exhibits on the persecution. The nearest station is Tsuwano Station.

I did not expect to find a catholic church in the middle of Tsuwano. I walked by it once and it was crowded so I made a note to go again later to see if I could see the inside. I did come back later...

The church was completed in 1879 and was constructed by father Marc Marie de Rotz, who visited Shitsu in 1879, and local believers. Located around five minutes’ walk to the east of Hirosaki Park, Catholic Hirosaki Church was built in 1910. It was constructed in the Romanesque style, with a spire, and with prominent pillars at the left and right corners of the front face. The oak-wood altar that faces the door at the far end of the interior was a gift from the Church of St. Thomas in Amsterdam; the altar was made in 1866, and won an award for its design at an exhibition held in Antwerp, Belgium.

Tsuruoka Catholic Cathedral is located a five-minute walk from the Shiyakusho (City Hall) mae bus stop on the bus line from Tsuruoka Station. It is a beautiful church with a red roof and white walls, designed by Father Papineau and completed in 1903. A masterpiece of Meiji (1868–1912) period Romanesque architecture. On one of its altars stands the only statue of the Black Madonna in Japan and one of the few in the world. Another feature unique among Japanese churches is that its pictorial windows are not made of stained glass but of pictures painted on transparent paper pressed between two panes of glass.

A church built by the Hirosaki Methodist Church in 1906. Located close to Hirosaki Castle Botanical Garden, the wooden building’s gothic style architecture with two towers is an extremely rare example constructed during the Meiji period. A variety of traditional crafts were used in the decorate of the church as well. The pulpit and communion table are painted Tsugaru-nuri lacquer, and the donation baskets are traditional woven vine work. Visitors are permitted, but not when staff are not present or during church events.

I had seen the 1/10th scale building and bumped into it in the middle of my walk-about. I did not enter for it isnt my faith and i was heading somewhere else. It is is large enough to see.

This Christian church is located a one-minute walk from the Motomachi-koen-mae bus stop and is also a five-minute walk from Motomachi-Chukagai Station. The Romanesque church blends elements of Western and Japanese architecture such as a French-style exterior and an interior with Japanese tatami mat flooring and Parisian stained glass.
