  • Ryugakubo

    Ryugakubo spring, located in Yachi, Tsunan-machi, gushes forth from the Tsunan valley and has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 springs. The spring comes up from the Naeba volcanic layer at the rate of 30tons per minute. This incredible rate of turnover means that the water never muddies or clouds and the spring has become an intrinsic part of everyday life as a source of water for local residents. The Japanese beech trees and Mongolian oaks that surround the spring give it a mystical quality and there are many legends of dragons associated with the pond. The pond is an easy one-minute walk from the parking lot but as you continue around to the rear you'll find the Ryugakubo-jinja Shrine. The shrine draws lots of visitors and there you can ladle some of the spring water for yourself.

    A spring also known as the Hakuunsui located in Gujo-Hachiman, an area famous for its abundance of clean water, a 10 minute drive from the Gujo-Hachiman Interchange. This famous spring was selected as number one on a list of Japan’s most renowned springs. The pure waters which well up from the source spring here have been used by local residents for daily life needs since ancient times. In 1471, renga poem master Sogi Iio exchanged poems here with To Tuneyori—lord of Gujo Domain, Mino Province and Sogi’s teacher in poetry—when the former was making his way back to Kyoto. This event led to the spring coming to be called the “Sogisui” (“Sogi Water”) and has also resulted in rich cultural activities such as the Sogisui Jinsai festival held each year on August 20.

    A Shinto shrine located in a shopping arcade area not far from the JR Ogaki Station’s south entrance rotary. A well is located at the shrine which was built to replace a turtle pond which once stood in front of Ogaki Station. Ogaki City is well-known for the abundance of clean water which wells up from under the ground in the area. As one would expect, the waters of the well here are also extremely clear and clean, and the well has even been selected as one of Ogaki’s 20 best water-related sites by the city. In part because the well was built through donations by local residents, the well is extremely well-maintained. There are also many trees and green plants growing around the well, making it a great place to stop, take a break, and cool off in the middle of a hot summer day.

    A scenic well located a five minute walk from the Kaganoguchi bus stop on the Kintetsu Bus from JR Ogaki Station. One of the most celebrated natural spring wells of the many found in Ogaki, a place which has been known for its abundance of water since ancient times, this popular well was also selected as one of the 100 most beautiful springs in the Heisei period. The current well was dug in 1988. On weekends, the area bustles with people come to enjoy the burbling well’s beauty and partake in some its delicious waters. In 1991, a garden pond fed by the well and a children’s park were erected around the well; sticklebacks (Hariyo), a rare variety of fish which can only live in pure waters, swim in the pond.

    This water springs from the valley of Mt. Nakahiruzen from among the three peaks of Hiruzen (Mt. Kamihiruzen, Mt. Nakahiruzen, Mt. Shimohiruzen) in Hiruzen Shimofukuda, Maniwa City. The cool 11 degree Celsius water that flows year-round formed a gourd-shaped pond that is 12 meters east to west, and it is used as water for daily living. It is also one of the 100 Best Waters of Japan.

    Ever since monk Hakushin of the Mino province trained here, this spot has been considered a holy land. Descending the stairs about 30 meters from the approach into the valley will bring you to a stone statue Yakushi Kannon-do temple. The spring bubbling up to the right of the Yakushi Kannon statue is considered holy, and is believed to cure ailments. The Ministry of the Environment designated it one of Top 100 Famous Water in Japan, and it is usually crowded with visitors.

    This Jizo-son statue is enshrined along the Itachi river in Ishikura-machi, Toyama City. The same area is famous as being the site of a spring pond filled with Itachi river area water, selected one of the 100 Exquisite and Well-Conserved Waters in Heisei Era. The supplied Mitaraisui, known as cooling water that soothes any ailment, and is known as a local water that prolongs life. People flock here to collect it.

    "The name of this spring literally translates to ""Life Extending Water,"" and as this implies, according to legend drinking its waters would give long life. One legend says that the forces of the mighty samurai lord Takeda Shingen stopped here to drink as they made their way to Shinano, restoring their strength. Today, visitors are not permitted to drink the spring's waters due to environmental conservation reasons, but the Kannondaira plain is situated in front of the pond and visitors can take in a sweeping view of the Southern Japan Alps and Mt. Fuji, and many people make their way here to take in the lovely area scenery."

Many springs still dot the area today and visitors can enjoy strolling from pond to pond.

    "A famous spring situated along National Route 341 in Numata, Tazawa, Tazawako, Senboku City. The spring's name, which literally translates to ""Tea-Making Spring,"" is derived from the fact that the lords of Akita Domain would use its waters to make delicious tea. Even today, many people come here to draw and drink its waters, and there's even an unmanned shop where visitors can purchase a PET bottle to take some spring water home with them. There's also a farmers marker opposite the spring on the other side of the road."

The waters of the spring were famously used to make the meals of the wealthy Satakeminami merchant family from 1620 to 1892. Drinking the waters is said to give one strength, and so a stone monument was erected at the spring with characters meaning ""Power Water."""

    This park was originally called Gionden, because it was once part of Kyoto Gion-sha temple's gardens, it became Gyoden in the local accent. Famous for its spring cherry blossoms, early summer Japanese irises, and the Gyoden no Sawashimizu spring water (one of the Top 100 Heisei Famous Water), its most impressive sight is probably the iris blooming season from mid- to late-June.

    This group of springs, a 30-minute drive from JR Bungo-Taketa Station, is one of several found in Taketa. Selected for inclusion in the Top 100 Famous Water, the springs well out of the ground in a tranquil area surrounded by farm fields. The water which gushes forth throughout the area is soft and sweet, and is also used by the adjacent Go Tofu Shop to make its products. The tofu shop's spring was dug by the owner and is privately owned, but all are welcome to take home bottles of its waters for free. After collecting some spring water, many people like to stop by the shop and buy some of its tofu and soy milk desserts.
